AUSTRALIA COMPLAINS OF BAD JUDGING OF DAIRY PRODUCE.
(United Press Assn. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received October 23, 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, October 22. The Australian butter authorities are amazed at the judging at the London dairy show of the different judges of salted and unsalted butter. There is no complaint against the former, but the low marks awarded to the bulk of the unsalted exhibits, especially for flavour reduced a large proportion of the entries below Australia’s lowest export standard. Many exhibits received only 20 out of 50 points for flavour. It is pointed out that New Zealand did not compete this year owing to dissatisfaction with the judging of last year.— Australian Press Association.
Counterfeit coins are being circulated in Christchurch, the face value of such coins received at one of the city banks during the last few days being nearlv £2. Of the suburban branches those in Sydenham seem to be receiving more spurious coins than others. The design, even to the milled edges, is accurate, as though a moulding had been taken direct from genuine coins. Florins, both Australian and English, are the principal coins counterfeited, but yesterday a bad shilling was passed across a bank counter. It was lighter than a legitimate shilling to the extent of the weight of a threepenny piece, the difference in the case of a florin being about that of a sixpence. A dull appearance also marks the bad coins, which are apparently made of aluminium and lead. It is believed that the “minting” is done in Australia.
