FOOTHILLS GET WELCOME RAIN

ONLY ENOUGH TO LAY DUST ON PLAINS LAND.

Though the rain which fell early this morning will do a certain amount of good, farmers are looking for more. The fall on the plains themselves was only sufficient to lay the dust, but nearer the foothills right from Peel Forest to above Whiterock the rain was heavier. Cereal crops are backward owing to the absence of rain recently, but if more moisture falls there should be wonderful growth, as there is plenty of heat in the ground. In some cases the crops are even looking brownish The rain this morning will to some extent freshen growth on the plains, and will do a great deal of good roupd the foothills, where, as on the plains, the surface of the land is described as being as hard as a board. This has prevented good working of the land for such crops as linseed, potatoes, rape and turnips. In spite of the dry surface, the subsoil is still fairly moist. Reports from Ashburton state that the fall there was a quarter of an inch.
