ARBITRATION ALWAYS.
To the Editor. Dear Sir, —May a humble trades unionist be permitted to commend the “Star” for its consistently logical attitude towards arbitration. As you said in a leading article last evening: “It would be absurd to argue that the people of Australia have not taken the most effective way of warning politicians that they must keep their hands off the arbitration system, and there is a lesson in this for those per-! sons in New Zealand, principally in the ranks of the Reform Party, who would gladly abolish the arbitration system and substitute nothing in its place.’ It is interesting to notice that Mr C. P. Agar, of Christchurch, speaking at Auckland as president of the Dominion Chambers of Commerce, said he believed that the abolition of the Arbitration Court would increase the prosperity of the country, etc., and so on. An alluring little bit of theory What about Mr Agar putting it to the test by standing for Parliament at next election with the abolition of the Arbitration Court as the main plank of hu bold programme? The result of the poll I am sure, would remind Mr C. P. Agar of certain past elections—very forcibly. No, sir, the solution is not to do away with the Arbitration Court, but. as the Sydney “Bulletin” suggested some time ago, enforce its rulings on employed and employer alike with all the power the State can command. That was, of course, with reference to con ditions in Australia, where Mr Bruce has been weak-kneed in the face of almost every crisis that came his wav. —I am, etc., PROGRESSIVE.
