LOCAL RECORDS TO BE MADE OF EARTHQUAKES.

(Special to the 44 Star.”) WELLINGTON, October 15. It should not be long before a number of local earthquake recorders are in operation in New Zealand. They have been specially designed to deal with big movements, and will not be upset by ’quakes of a similar nature to the recent disturbances in the South Island. On their arrival, the new instruments will be tested out at the Observatory before being distributed to the various earthquake localities, including Christchurch, Westport, New Plymouth, and Wellington. When all the new seismographs have been installed, it will be possible to calculate the precise origin of every local tremor, and much will be learnt of the movements of the earth’s crust in the vicinity of New Zealand.
