WRECKED LINER BLOWN TO PIECES.
EXPLOSIONS SHATTER STRANDED HOCHST. (United Press Assn.— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. > (Received October 15, 10.30 a.m.) COLOMBO, October 14. The German cargo liner Hochst exploded off Minicoy Island, where she has been stranded on the reef for twenty days. The fire raged, and the crew of twenty-eight took to the lifeboats after sending a radio S.O.S. The liner Mathura rushed to the rescue, and saved all the crew. There is no news of the captain of the German liner Lauterfels, which is now on the reef, three attempts to tow her off having failed. The Lauterfels had one woman passenger on board. She donned a boiler suit, and was lowered by ropes to a life-boat and taken on board a passing liner. The wireless from the Hochst was sent only just in time, a second explosion blowing the transmitter to pieces.—United Service.
