SPREYDON BURGESSES HAVE ANNUAL MEETING.
The fifth annual meeting of the Spreydon Burgesses’ Association was held last night, Mr P. Hennessy presiding over a large attendance of members. The annual report stated that through the efforts of the association a library had been obtained for Spreydon. After continual requests and with the aid of Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., a slot telephone had been installed at the corner of Stourbridge and Lyttelton Streets. Through the association interesting itself in the abolition of Smart’s Pond, the City Council had had it filled in, and it was now being levelled for grass sowing. The association’s thanks were due to Messrs A. Smith and D. Sykes for attending to matters in connection with the Drainage, Hospital and Tramway boards, and also to the Press for publicity given, and to the City Council for the sympathetic manner in which the demands had been received. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mr P--1 lennessv vice-presidents, Messrs r • Grey, E. Langford, A. Clark. F. Schwartz, J. Voss and T. Schou; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Clemens: honorary auditor, Mr II Campbell: roads and footpath committee, Messrs E. Langford and J Voss. . With the object of furthering the project to erect a hall in central Sprey don a committee consisting of the president, vice-presidents and honorary secretary, also Messrs S. Scouse, P. Hand, W. Gaskell and A. Baxter was appointed to consider ways and means to obtain same. A donation of £1 Is was voted to the Spreydon Library for the use of the reading room for meetings. Opportunity was taken to present to Mr J. Clemens, who has been honorary secretary and treasurer for five years, with a tea set in appreciation of services rendered.
Correspondence, was received from the North Canterbury Hospital Board in reply to the association’s complaint of the excessive charge to take a patient to Bottle Lake. It was decided after a good deal of discussion which favoured free conveyance for infectious cases to send the reply along with the association’s letter to Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., to obtain his advice 011 the matter. Considerable discussion took place ever a recent incident in the district through stock being driven to the saleyards. The three following motions were carried: “That the City Council be advised that stock is being driven to the salevards outside the specified hours.” “ That the association draw the City Council’s attention to the nuisance that is being caused by dead sheep being allowed to be_ left in the accommodation paddock in Barrington Street, and cattle being left in the paddock all night in the midst of a thickly popu lated district.” “ That the association join up witl the Riccarton Borough Council for thi removal of the saleyards from Riccar ton to Sockburn.” It was decided to withdraw from tht United Burgesses’ Association.
