HANMER NURSES’ HOME WILL BE OPENED SOON.
The new Nurses’ Home at Hanmer—a substantial and artistic two-storey brick and concrete structure —which is to cost over £13,000, is now rapidly approaching completion, and it is expect ed that it will be out of the contractor’s hands by the end of this month. The building embodies the very latest ideas in to the arrangement and construction of a nurses’ home, and is charmingly situated between the men’s and women’s hospitals on a site overlooking the golf links. Owing to the rapid growth of the hospitals at Hanmer it has been necessary to provide accommodation for a considerable number of nurses, and the. new building contains fifty-six bedrooms in addition to numerous other rooms. A special feature is the section to be used by the nurses on night duty. The walls and doors dividing this section from the rest of the build ing are sound-proof and shutters are provided for the windows in order to keep out the light while the nurses are sleeping in the daytime. There are' also special balconies provided on the sunny side of the building. A large dining-room has been provided, and adjoining it is a large lounge, with sliding doors which can be removed easily whenever a dance or concert is held. There are also reception rooms and special rooms for the matron, and many of the bedrooms open on to sunny balconies. All the floors are of jarrah timber and the quality of the materials used throughout the building is the best obtainable. The contractor is Mr C. Calvert, of Christchurch.
