PROGRESS ASSOCIATION APPROACH THE COUNCIL ABOUT BRIGHTON GALA .
"They are only trying to rub it in.” This statement was made by Mr G. W. Bishop at the meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council last even ing, when a letter from the New Brigh ton Greater Progress Association deal ing with the 1929 gala was under con sideration. The letter made a( request “ that the council use discretion with regard to the running of the gala in not allowing a repetition of last year.” "The association have been informed that the council did not run the gala last year,” said Mr Bishop, “but they are not satisfied to let the mat ter rest.” "The council did not run the gala last year,” said Mr E. A. M. Leaves "and we were not responsible for any thing thgtt took place on the foreshore during the gala period. The Greater Progress Association know as well as anybody that the gala was run by a private concern.” A motion that the letter be received was not seconded and lapsed. Mr Leaver then moved that a reply be sent stating that the council did not run the gala last year. In seconding the motion Mr Bishop said that he wished it to be understood that the council did not want a repe tion of last year. Mr J. S. Ainsworth suggested that the council should not snub the as sociation altogether, but should thank them for the interest they had shown The Mayor: The motion is a bit bold Mr F. D. Muirson: I think the motion should go as it stands. The motion was carried. In regard to a second clause in the association’s letter, it was decided to reply that in the event of the council running a gala it would welcome the support of the association.
