Two Youths In Court Are Remanded On Heavy Bail.
POLICE ALLEGE ONE HAD AUTOMATIC PISTOL, SANDBAG AND TYRE LEVER. JAMES LINDLAND ANDERSON, aged 18, and Maurice Hamilton Gregory, 17, were charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning with being idle and disorderly persons, in that they were found hy night, without lawful excuse, on the enclosed garden of a house at 100, Papanui Road. Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M., was on the Bench. Mr Stacey appeared for Gregory, and Mr Goodman for Anderson. “ I ask for a remand in this case,” said the Senior-Sergeant. Mr Stacey: I ask for bail for Gregory, sir. He comes of good people and has a good record. “I oppose bail,” sadd the Senior-Sergeant. “ Our records don't agree that one of the boys is as white as he is painted.” “I also ask for bail for Anderson,” said Mr Goodman. ‘ He has a good record.” “ These two had their shoes off,” said the Senior-Sergeant “ Anderson had an electric torch, and Gregory had an automatic pistol with one live cartridge in it, a sandbag and a motor-car tyre lever. They also had pieces of black cloth which might have been used as masks. . There was also evidence which might connect them with other olfences. Mr Goodman: Concerning temporary suppx-ession of the name “ I’d rather you didn’t ask,” said the Magistrate. “I would only have to refuse you.” Mr Stacey: Your worship has discretionary powder to take the cases in the Children’s Court. Bail would be a boon, allowing counsel to get the true facts of the case.” “I will take the case in this court," said the Magistrate. ‘ Bail is allowed at £SOO in each case, with sureties of £500.” Both accused were ordered to report twice daily to the police. The remand was for one week.
