Racing and Trotting.

(BY

"ARGUS.”

RACING NOTES. Nominations for the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting will close at six o’clock on Fridav evening. * '*■** Acceptances for the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting are due on Fridav. * * * * The Riccarton horses who raced at Wingatui last week are nearly all enjoying a rest for a few days. A few of them were given light exercise this morning, but others did not even visit the track. * * * * Hoylake is gradually getting into good shape for important engagements. He has been nominated for the Wellington and North Canterbury meetings, and a final decision between the two will be deferred until after the North Canterbury weights appear. In the meantime, however, T. Lloyd is disposed to favour Trent ham, as the trip and a couple of races would do the imported horses a lot of good. * * * * The two-year-old filly Satisfy, who won the M’Lean Stakes at Wingatui last week, looks none the worse for her race, and she seemed keen to go when sent out for a short sprint this morning. She has an engagement in the Wellesley Stakes, and if she is sent to Trentham next week she will keep the North Island youngsters busy, as she is a smart galloper, who stays on well. * * * Rapier has been resting since he returned home from Wingatui. He showed signs of lameness after a gallop, and he was not raced on the trip. He appears to have got rid of the trouble, and 11. Nurse expects to gallop him later in the week, in view of a trip to Trentham next week. Rapier is very forward, and, provided there is nothing seriously amiss with him, a few days’ rest will not do him any harm. * «ic Jis =* W. Stone had Silver Paper, Aspiring nnd Tray Bond on the track this morning, and gave them light exercise. They look well after their Wingatui trip. They will be sent to Trentham next week. Silver Paper has not been harshly treated in the Shorts Handicap, and he should put up a good performance, while he is booked to run in the Ilarcourt Cup on the second day. * :ie * * Leader has shown slight signs of soreness since he returned from his Auckland trip, and he is on the easy list for a few days. * * * * Red Heckle has practically recovered from the attack of kidney trouble which affected him at Wingatui. F. Christmas has decided, however, to cancel his proposed trip to Trentham, but he. hopes to have the four-year-old at his best for the Riccarton carnival next month. * * * 4= , According to a report from Hayrke s Bav, the two-year-old sister to the Australian Jockey Club’s Derby winner, Phar Lap, was sold last week to H. RTelford, the lessee and trainer of that high-class three-year-old. Apparently, however, the report was premature, as .a cable message from Sydney states that the negotiations have fallen through. * * * ¥ Mr W. 11. Ballinger left for Wellington last night. His horses also went by the same steamer, after racing at the recent South Island meetings, where they were not fortunate enough to secure more than place money. * * * * B. 11. Morris, J. Barry and T. Metcalf, three North Island jockeys, who rode at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting, left for the north last night. * * * * The Riccarton jockey A. E. Ellis misses no opportunity to attend a race meeting, in any part of the Dominion. After riding at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, he hurried south, arriving at Dunedin last Wednesday night, in time for two days’ racing at Wingatui. He has a number of engagement at Masterton next Saturday, and a week later he will be back in the North Island, for the Trentham meeting. * * * * SiK’er Paper is expected to make a trip to Trentham for the Wellington Racing Club's spring meeting, and A. E. Ellis will ride him in the Ilarcourt Cup. on the second day. Silver Paper proved himself up to a mile as a three-year-old, and he should experience no difficulty in running a mile and a qua* ter this season, though he may not be quite ready yet for a hard race over that distance.

The South Canterbury three year-olds Night Lad and Pink Coat are engaged at Trentham, and it is probable that both of them will be racing there.

Money Mine was one of the disappointments at the Dunedin meeting last week. He was well placed in the Ranfurly Handicap till the straight was reached, but he failed to run on, being a long way back at the finish. He competed on the second day in the Ranfurly Handicap, but again he faded out at the business end. On this form his New Zealand Cup chance does not look bright.

W. D. Moroney, who has been quartered at Wanganui for some time with Mr C. E. Elgar’s horses, will return to the Wairarapa this week, taking his teaiff of nine for the Masterton and Trentham fixtures.

According to private reports received in New Zealand. Pomp was more than unlucky in the Breeders’ Plate at Randwick. He will add interest to the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham if produced in that event.

The Wellesley Stakes, to be decided at Trentham next Saturday week, should see the first inter-island clash of the season’s juveniles, and, in addition, Pomp, who ran a very creditable second in the Breeders' Plate at Randwick, may be a contestant. Satisfy and Tray Bond, who finished first and third in the M'Lean Stakes at Wingatui, are engaged, and Simba represents the best public form of the north to date. Unfortunately, Chief Link was not entered. Pass On, Chrysology and Watch Officer are improvers, and Tenterden’s prospects may be gauged more accurately if he is produced at Masterton next Saturday. Public form points to Simba, Satisfy and Pomp disputing the issue. Colts carry 8.7, geldings 8.4 and fillies 8.2 in this race, it being one of the few races in the Dominion in which the gelding allowance maintains.

The Derby winner Phar Lap carried a set of colours which have a sentimental value. The owner, H. R. Telford, has been a close friend for years of Mr R. Price, the bookmaker, and when Mr Price was on his world tour a few months ago he wished to bring back a remembrance of it to his friend. So he secured abroad a set of Telford’s colours—red, black, and white hoops, sleeves, and red cap—and gave them to him, expressing the hope that they would win a Derby.

Just prior to the win of Phar Lap in the A.J.C. Derby it was cabled from Sydney that the Nightraid three vearold was to be scratched for the Melbourne Cup. So far there is no announcement that he has been taken out of the big two-mile event. In announcing that Phar Lap would not be a starter in the Melbourne Cup, for which he was then joint favourite with Crucis, his lessee-trainer, H. R. Telford, is reported as saying:—“The stable has not a penny on him for the Cup, and neither I nor anybody else with any authority has advised anyone to back him. I know he has been extensively supported, and is equal favourite with Crucis, but those who stepped in and specked him did so at their own risk. I will not take him out straight away, but you can rest assured that he will not go to the post. I am making this statment to save the small bettor, who may, perhaps, have a fancy for him. As to the big man, he is not considered, and any of those who have already backed him deserved to fall in. There is nothing wrong with Phar Lap. After he contests the Derbies he will be turned out for a long spell. He is a big overgrown fellow, and I am of the opinion that he will not run out two miles. Even should he win the Derbies easily, he will not start in the Cup. I have him on lease for a good while yet, and as a four-year-old I am of the opinion, that he will be a good proposition. To run him in such a severe race as the Cup might knock him out, and I am not one who will take a risk of ruining a good horse.” The writer reporting the above goes on to say that Telford’s statement created a great stir in sporting circles. Several racing men were inclined to the belief that the trainer could not be serious in his intention to withdraw the Derby favourite from the Melbourne Cup, and they backed up their ideas by supporting the gelding both straight-out and in doubles for substantial amounts. Phar Lap’s owner, Mr A. J. Davis, was among the cup supporters of the horse, having backed him for a friend to win £IOOO from a leading Sydney bookmaker. Subsequently the bet was cancelled and two well-known Melbourne ringmen also let another backer off the bets he had made about the horge. Mr Davis confessed that he was ignorant of Telford's intentions, and the fact of his supporting the horse was proof of this.

trotting notes. Nominations for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s spring meeting will close at noon on Thurs- ** * * A pat-ment for the New Zealand Trotting Cup is due at noon on Thursday. * * * * The New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on Saturday, promises to be very successful. The acceptances are highly satisfactory, large fields being assured in all the events, and with plenty of improving young horses available, there should be some first-class sport.

C. S. Donald, in charge of Lindbergh and Pear! Logan, arrived home this morning after a successful trip north, during which each horse was a winner at the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting last Saturday.

The training track at New Brighton is in capital order at present and the near approach of the meeting has caused more interest to be shown in the training work.

Repute, who is looking very well, trotted about a mile and three-quarters this morning, going at a solid speed throughout. She went very steadily, making no mistakes.

Avenger and Mac Dillon went a mile and a quarter. Mac Dillon led and at the end of a little over a quarter of a mile Blue Glen, who was in saddle, joined the pair. The trio finished close together, but it looked as though Avenger could have done a lot better in the useful work-out.

Avon wood led the trotter Tamerlane by about a couple of lengths in a work-out over a mile, both horses going capitally, although neither was at top speed.

* * * Alpine Melody did a little more than a mile at a useful speed, pacing solidly all the way.

* * * * August Pointer was not hurried over the first half of a mile and a quarter work-out, but he finished up fast.

Torchlight, who looks as though he is on the improve, went a mile and a quarter by himself, being sent along at a good clip over the last furlong. s}c

Harold Thorpe, who is building up well, was jogged with Firpo, the former being on the lead, and the latter in the sulky.

THE PASSING OF A GREAT RIDER

THE DEATH OF JOHN M'COMBE.

The death of Mr John M'Combe. which occurred in Sydney at the end of last week, removes a prominent figure from the racing world of the Dominion. He commenced his riding career in Otago, and he piloted his first winner at Kurow. At all times full of sentiment, he treasured a warm feeling for Kurow on that account, and in his later years, as a trainer, he never missed an opportunity to take horses to the little spring meeting in the North Otago village. He had a lengthy record as a jockey, and he was widely recognised as one of the Dominion's foremost riders, being a great judge of pace and a vigorous horseman, who could get the last ounce out pf his mount in a tight fihish. Most jpf hxs early riding was done in Otago, where his important successes included the Dunedin Cup on Casket, Jupiter and Parable, while he made a visit to Riccarton more than thirty years ago to win the Derby and Canterbury Cup on Euroclydon. He made many other trips to Riccarton at that period, and one of them was disastrous. It was in the spring of 1903, when he won the New Zealand Cup on Canteen. There was an inquiry for interference, and, though the placings were not altered, M’Combe was disqualified for two years. Soon after his return he won the Dunedin Champagne Stakes for Mr G. Murray Aynsley on Bonny Glen. A few years later he took up his resi dence at Riccarton, becoming first horseman to the late Mr G. G. Stead, for whom he won some good races, including the Welcome Stakes on Armlet and Nautiform, Canterbury Champagne Stakes on Count Witte and Golden Slipper, Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap on Munjeet and Great Northern Derby on Boniform, while he made a trip to Sydney and piloted Armlet to victory in the same colours in the Gimcrack Stakes. On the death of Mr Stead, he rode for a time for his sons, Messrs W. G. and G. L. Stead, his most notable success for them being on Boniform in the Great Northern Derby. On retiring from riding, he took up training at Riccarton, where he concerned himself chiefly with his own horses. He won a number of races, including the Winter Cup and the Thompson Handicap with Sunny Loch. A few months ago he took Crown Area and Moorgas to Sydney, but after racing them for a time he sold both of them This action was prompted by the state of his health. lie suffered for years from the effects of a fall, for which he was operated on several times, without permanent relief. While in Sydney he had a recurrence of the trouble, and he had been under treatment in a Sydney hospital for some time past.

One of the horses the deceased was closely associated with as a rider was St Denis, on whom he won many races. St Denis carried the colours of M’Combe’s close friend, the late Mr Frank Griffen, and it is a coincidence that Mr Griffen’s widow died in Christchurch on Sunday. The late Mr M’Combe was a likeable man, and he made hosts of friends, by whopj he will be deeply mourned. He leaves a widow, one daughter (Mrs R. S. Bagby) and a young grandson, of whom he was very proud. The flags at Wingatui were flown at half mast on Saturday, the Dunedin Jockey Club paying this tribute of respect to the memory of one who spent more than half his life in Otago, and who, first as a jockey and later on as an owner and trainer, was for many years closely identified with racing on the club’s course.
