» , (Special to the " Star.”) GREYMOUTH, October 11. FLAX CULTURE. The flax-milling proposition in the o vicinity of Rotokino swamp. Mount 3, Hercules, Westland, is likely to take r. definite shape in the near future. This Ls is largely a Canterbury enterprise. A t considerable area of freehold has been t- secured for flax growing. There is a large area to be drained, and the sure plus water will be carried into the 1 Wataroa River. Road access will be e required, and workmen’s homes are to be erected. The matter of roading will .. be gone into shortly by the authorities. MINES TO RESUME. [. The Reefton mines will resume tomorrow. The non-Unionists were given 3 the option of joining up by 4 p.m. tor fl a y. or remaining non-unionists for all . time. The strike at Blackball continues. EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE. The Grey County Council has receivo ed advice that the Government has , authorised a grant of £I4OO to restore r earthquake damage on a £ for £ basis, • almost half of which will be absorbed r in paying for the restoration of the 5 Nelson Creek to Bell Hill Road. F GREYMOUTH TECHNICAL SCHOOL. t The Greymouth Technical School ’ Committee met this evening, Mr T E. ■ Coates presiding. The chairman extended a welcome to ; Mrs Shuttleworth, who was taking her i seat on the board for the first time. A vote of thanks was accorded to : Mrs C. H. Rose for her services during her term on the board. The Borough Council was granted the use of the manual room on November 20 for polling purposes. The Grey Power Board advised pre senting the board with an electric cooker for the instruction of pupils in cooking classes. The resignation of Mr Lionel Clark, woodwork instructor, was received and accepted with regret. Mrs Shuttleworth and Dr M’Brearty were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. Mr J. Iluttqn, principal, who attended the recent Technical Conference, gave a resume of the business transacted. The principal reported that the recent school fete and exhibition by the pupils netted £SO. A vote of thanks was accorded the teachers and scholars for their activities in connection with the fete. GOLDEN WEDDING.
The golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Jacob Baty, of 21 Papanui Road. Christchurch, who were married in Weardale, England, on October 12, 1879, was celebrated on Saturday at Coal Creek, when about 100 relatives and friends foregathered. After a short | service by the Rev G. E. Brown, the i celebration breakfast was partaken when toasts were honoured and con gratulatory speeches made. Mr and Mrs Baty were the recipients of a large number of substantial presents, which included two Morris chairs, from the members of the Baty family, and a rose bowl from the employees of T. B Baty, Ltd. Mr and Mrs Baty arrived at Dunedin in 1.880 by the Margaret Galbraith. They settled in Greymouth in 1885, going to reside in Christchurch nine years ago. There are five sons and four daughters in the family, and thirty grandchildren. A thanksgiving service was held in the Methodist Church yesterday. The visitors from other parts of New Zealand, numbering forty. were taken’ to Punakaiki to-dav, and ! were entertained at a social' gathering j this evening.
