To judge from the reticence of the press on the subject (says the "Shipping World”), Germany appears to have taken such a lukewarm interest in the line performance of the Mauretania as to have missed the point of it, which is not that she failed to beat the Bremen s record, but that, in spite of her age, she has reduced the difference in time between the two ships to as near as no matter. But one German there is who. realising this, has the grace to say so publicly. lie is, fortunately, the man who counts —no other than f.lerr Summing, the managing director of the Norddeutscher-Lloyd. who expresses himself thus in the Kolnische Zei"ln view of the sporting spirit of the English, which found expiession on the occasion of the Bremen's record voyage, it was almost painful to me to notice that the German public did net fully appreciate the' great achievement of the J Mauretania. What are a few hours’ ditference in the times of the voyage? ; "We shall be happy and proud if in ! twenty years we. can maintain so small ja margin of time against the latest I competitor. That a twenty-yeai -old ! .ship should possess qualities which even to-day enable new riigim-s to standing manner is an achievement • which cannot be too highly honoured. [ "We can all learn from each other In s this sense the Mauretania’s voyage is a i great example w> rthy of emulation. The ; Vsson for us , is to seek, not new r.i ords. but a steady and p. udent set vice i which will promote the comfort of pas- - nengers, so that we. too. in twenty. 1 years may possess an unspent ship SOUTHERN PRINCESS CONVERTED j IN RECORD TIME. Something like a record in ship con-

version and overhauling has been i achieved by Messrs Cam me 11 j Laird and Co., of Birkenhead in dealing with the oil-tanker San Pa tticio, purchased by the Southern Whaling and Sealing Company. Liverpool, from the Eagle Oil Transport Company The vessel, now the Southern Princess, < has been converted into a whaling factory and is on her way to the Ross Sea whaling grounds, via Panama and Dunedin. The work, which is the first of its kind carried out by a firm on the , West Coast, was completed in eighty five days—eight days within the time stipulated in the contract. The vessel was fitted with a slipway aft for hauling whales on board—on to a new deck erected above the existing upper deck for practically three-quarters the length of the ship On this deck the cutting-up operations will be carried out. Below there are tanks, boilers, packing machines, and other apparatus, and on a deck still lower there are the settling tanks. The existing main tanks will be used for carrying fuel oil outwards foi the use of the factory, the ship and the five steam whalers by which she will be accompanied. In the alterations about five miles of pipes have been used, and weight representing between 1700 and 2000 tons has been added to the displacement. The vessel now has a carrying capacity of 7 5,000 barrels of whale oil. or about 12,500 tons. She is the third converted for the same owners —all in British yards. PILOTING THE BREMEN. Captain C. S. Pearce, a Trinity House pilot, writes to the "Shipping World’’ as follows: "The whole world knows about the speed of the North German Lloyd liner Bremen, but nothing has been said of her ease of handling or of the effect of this upon speed. It might be imagined that so big a vessel would be unwieldy. but I have had the privilege of piloting this vessel on each occasion that she has called at Southampton, and in the whole of my twenty-two years’ experience as a pilot there. I have never known a ship of anything approaching the size of the Bremen which was more easy to handle. She exceeded all my expectations, and gave me little anxiety At the invitation of the owners, I sailed with the Bremen from Bremerhaven on her first trip to Southampton in order that I should be.‘at home’ on the bridge before actually taking charge. One of the first things I noticed was that she does not drag a lot of ‘dead water behind her. thus impeding speed. She leaves the water remarkably clean, and the line ‘run’ thus obtained must mean, not only increased speed; it must mean that every drop of water running along the ship’s side is operating upon the rudder. The size and, consequently, the speed, of liners must ultimately be limited by the human factor—-the ability to handle the ship in confined waters, and in and out of dock —but the .Performance of the Bremen seems to indicate that the limit has not yet been ' eached.” ISLANDS SERVICES.
