KINGFISH COMES ON TO MARKET.

BAD WEATHER MAKES WHITEBAIT SCARCE.

Kingfish is a new line in Christchurch fish shops now. It is selling at Is per lb. Whitebait is scarce owing to rough weather discolouring the rivers, and there has been a rise in price of 6d per 31b compared with last week. Groper and oysters are about finished for the season. Prices quoted are as follows:—Trumpeter Is and Is 3d per lb, ling 6d, moki lOd and Is. terakihi 7d and 10d, gurnet 7d and Is, kingfish Is, skate 4d, soles Is, yellow flounders Is 3d, and whitebait Is 9d per 31b.

Vegetables Scarce. Vegetables have become more scarce recently, especially cabbages and cauliflowers. Spring cabbages are selling retail at from 6d to 8d each, and cauliflowers from 8d to Is 6d. Leeks are priced at 4d a bundle, root vegetables 2d a bundle, and local green peas 3s per lb. Local potatoes are ! priced at from lOd to Is 3d per lb, and North Island new potatoes from 6d to 8d per lb. The latter are mostly very small. Australian cucumbers grown in the open are worth from 8d to Is each, and local hothouse cucumbers at Is 6d per lb. Lettuces can be bought at 3d and 6d each, spinach at 3d a bundle, and Sydney marrows at 9d and Is 3d each. These are in good condition, and are a new line on the market. Californian onions are bringing 4d per lb, old potatoes from 5s 6d to 6s a sugarbag. Island tomatoes sell at Is per lb and local tomatoes at 3s and 3s 6d per lb.

Mandarins in stock are very sweet, but small, and are being retailed at 12s for Is. Bananas are priced at Is for from 10 to 6, navel oranges, which aielarge and for 3 ar>H

VTeat Prices Steady. Retail prices of meat show no change from those of last week. At the Addington stock sale beef values remained firm, except in the case of heavy steer beef. The lighter class of wethers advanced by about Is a head. Butchers state that, with values of hides and wool at a low level, any increase in the wholesale price of fat stock must necessarily go on to the carcase itself. The following are some of the retail prices per lb:—Beef: Flanks 4d, skirt steak 7d, beef steak from 7d, ribs from 7d, sirloin from 9d. Mutton: Flaps 3d, forequarters from sd, shoulders from 7d, legs from 83d, chops from 4d, Eggs Plentiful Supplies of eggs are plentiful, and it is stated that present values could not be held were it not for the export business. Prices this week are likely to remain at Is 23d a dozen for first grade, and Is 03d for second grade.
