METAL WORKERS’ AWARD SIGNED UP IN TERMS OF EXISTING AWARD.

The position of metalworkers’ assistants in the engineering industry came before the Conciliation Council to-day, when the application of the Amalgamated Engineering and Allied Trades’ Industrial Association of Workers for a new award was heard. The respondents were the Canterbury and Westland branches of the New Zealand Ironmasters’ Association and others. The assessors for the applicants were Messrs G. T. Thurston, F. Harman, M. R Johnston, W. Wills and W. Jagger, and for the respondents Messrs W. C-. Prime, G. M. Hall and G. A. Pascoe. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr W. H. Ilagger) presided. The Commissioner said this was a resumed sitting in the case begun at the end of 1928, when it was adjourned till last February. A further adjournment had been agreed to until the Arbitration Court had dealt with the Iron Trades dispute. That had now been c]one. Mr C. G. Wilkin applied for exemption of te Canterbury freezing companies from the provisions of the award. Air Thurston said the union would oppose the exemptions, but it was prepared to sign up an agreement in the terms of the old award, ’provided the date of expiry could be made the same as for the general engineering award. This was done, the date of expiry of the award being August 31, 1931.
