Sir Heaton and Lady Rhodes were passengers from the north this morning.

Mr E. C. Vaughan, representative at Leeston for the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, returned this week from a visit to Sydney and Melbourne. The following members of the Legislative Council arrived from the north by this morning’s ferry steamer :-*-Sir James Allen, Colonel the Hon J. G. Smith, the Hon T. S. Weston, the Hon G. Witty, the Hon D. T. Fleming and the Hon L. M. Isitt.

The following members of Parliament were passengers from the north this morning:—Messrs R. W. Ilawke, Clyde Carr, F. Waite, H. S. S. Kyle, E. J, Howard. D. Jones, 11. T. Armstrong, J. Bitchener and D. G. Sullivan.

The following Wellington visitors arrived in Christchurch this morning, and are staying at the United Service Hotel: —Messrs E. Johnston, R. L. Evatt, F. Gills, G. Jolly, C. W. Andrews, D. Isaacs, E. J. Pearce, R. Lyon, Barton Ginger, J. Foley, A. R. Brokenshaw, W. Perry and E. J. Ilyams. Messrs W. E. Kent (Invercargill) and IT. 11. Miller (Wellington) are guests at the Clarendon Hotel. The Rev E. Lionel Harvie, vicar pf Cambridge, Waikato, has been appointed rector of St Bartholomew's parish, Adelaide. He will succeed Archdeacon Moyes, who has been chosen as the Bishop of Armidale, New South Wales. Ordained deacon by Bishop Averill in 1913, Mr Harvie was created a priest in the following year, and his first curacy was at Stratford. He was subsequently curate at Hamilton, vicar at St Andrew’s, Inglewood, Taranaki, and vicar at St Andrew's, Epsom, Auckland, for a period of eight years. He became the vicar at Cambridge in 1927, and the rural dean of Hamilton in 1938. Mr Robert Parker, the veteran organist, completed his fifty-first year as organist and choirmaster of St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral in Wellington on Thursday, October 10. To mark the occasion a recital of choral works and organ music was given by the choir and the veteran organist. The programme included:—Choral Prelude (Bach), “How Lovely are Thy Dwellings” (Brahms), Barcarolle from 4th Concerto (Sterndale Bennett); “ Ave Maria” (Arcadelt) ; cantata, “ God, Thou are Great ” (Spohr); trio from “ Creation ” (Haydn); First Organ Sonata (Mendelssohn. At the close of the recital, the vicar (the Rev Canon Percival James), on behalf of the choir, gave a small present to their beloved choir, master to mark the occasion.

.Captain Orr-Ewing. aide-de-camp to the Governor-General, arrived by thi* morning’s ferry steamer. Messrs J. B. Rice and 6, Irving, whs have been spending a holiday on the West Coast, have returned to Christ* church. Mr W. Cable, manager of the Wei* lington Corporation Tramways, passed through Christchurch yesterday morn* ing on hie way to Dunedin. Mr G. D. Greenwood, Mr H. A Knight and Mr Mason, who have beer, attending the A-J.C. meeting in Sydney, are returning to New Zealand by the Ulimaroa. Mr R. D. Anstead, C.1.E., Director of Agriculture in the Madras Presidency, arrived in Auckland from India by the Maunganui- He will spend some time in the Dominion. Sir Truby King, who addressed a meeting of women and girls in Christ church yesterday morning, left by the express at noon for Dunedin, where he will conduct a short course in mid wifery, under the auspices of the Plur*ket Society. Mr W. S. Pratt has received advice that his appointment as head master has been approved by the committee of the Reef ton District High School and confirmed by the Nelson Educa tion Board. He leaves for Reef ton on October 30. Mr Alexander Hume, who has ectef as land salesman and branch manage! at Waimate for Messrs Pyne, Gould Guinness, Ltd., for the last twentj years, has taken charge of the land de partment in the Christchurch office o the National Mortgage and Agency Company.

Last evening, Mr R. T. C. Roberts. Telegraph Engineer, on behalf of thr combined exchange staffs, presented Mr M’Lennon, of the engineer's clerical staff, with a handsome oak chiming clock on the occasion of his forth* coming marriage. In making the pre sentation, Mr enumerated some of the excellent qualities possessed by Mr M’Lennon, and called upon Mr J. Iladfiejd. supervisor of the District Telegraph Engineer’s office, who en dorsed the previous speaker’s remarks. In responding, Mr M’Lennon thanked the donors and fellow-officers for their thoughtfulness and kind wishes for the years to come. He left later in the evening for Dunedin
