THE CLOCK TOWER.
To the Editor. Dear Sir, —I have come to the conclusion, after having time to look at the various new sites suggested for the Clock Tower, that Mr Beanland’s original idea of placing it at the corner of Victoria and Salisbury Streets would be approved of by most citizens who are concerned with the welfare of this monument. I must congratulate him on the fine choice he first made, and trust he will stand for his selected spot. It has several good points in i*s favour — (I) It is situated on the Main North Road; (2) this position is on a bend of the road and thus the tower and clock would be noticed with little effort by anyone entering the city; (3) it is at the entrance to the business centre; (4) the position could never become a menace to traffic; (5) it i$ but a short distance from the Queep’p statue; (6) it is near the students’ and other colleges, to whose scholars it would serve its original purpose. As in the west we have the Bridge of Remembrance and to the east the gen erous gifts of Mr Edmonds, I think that this site naturally offers itself as a position for this beautiful tower. Wishing Mr Beanland success in his efforts.—l am, etc., CITIZEN.
