Boxer's Retirement.
Mike M*Tigue is through with boxing. His recent fight with George Hoffman, in which -he was knocked qut in the second round, convinced him that it was time to retire. He started boxing twenty years ago, but no one knew how old he was. Now, however, he admits to being forty-five. Equally secretive now, he has declined to satisfy American curiosity in stating the extent of his fortune. The last of his many managers estimates it at £30,000. M’Tigue says that the hardest of his hundred fights was with Siki, who so dramatically brought an end to the career of Carpentier. j{ j{ Beckett as Film Star. Joe Beckett, the old English heavyweight champion, who lost to Georges Carpentier when battling for the European title, and possibly the best heavyweight England has had since the war, is following in the footsteps of Jack Dempsey, the old world's champion, and taking part in the production of films. He will appear in one of a series of three pictures, which will shortly be produced, based on stories specially written by H. G. Wells, and adapted for the screen by his son Frank. They are three-reel cornedy-dramas, inspired by the Cockney characterisations of Miss Elsa Lanchester, and entitled “ Blue Bottles,” “ Daydreams" and “ The Tonic.” The appearance of Beckett in a new “ adventure ” will be eagerly anticipated by his many friends in the sporting world. i-: st Professional Umpires. The Lawn Tennis Association Council have decided that it is undesirable to have professionals as umpires in matches in which amateurs take part.
