WHEN JOYCE RODE THE PONY.
Joyce had just arrived at her uncle's farm, where she spent all her holidays, and she was delighted to meet all her old friends again. “There’s Rover! ” she cried, “and there’s Neddy! But, oh, Uncle Harry, where are the darling wee chicles I used to feed when I was here at Easter? ” “ Wee chicks, indeed! There they are.” laughed her uncle, pointing to some leggy birds. “They’ve grown, just as you have.” “ Well, now I’m big, can I ride the pony in the field? ” asked Joyce, eagerly* “ Some time, perhaps, but not just at the moment. I must go and see to that barn. You talk to the hens till I come back.” But Joyce stood gazing at the pony and longing to be astride him. “ Like a ride, missie? I’ll help you up.” Tom the little boy who helped in the stable was speaking. And though Joyce knew she ought to wait for Uncle Harry, I’m afraid she said: “ Yes, please, I’d love it.” But a frisky pony without a saddle isn't easy to manage, and she was soon clinging on to the mane, terrified, while Tom rushed after her, shouting for help. Uncle Harry arrived just in time to see her tossed into the grass. Fortunately, she was only bruised, but it was a long time before she got over her fright. In the end she did learn to ride —but when Uncle Harry was there! STAMP CIRCLE. There was a large attendance at the above circle on Monday evening, when a paper on “Indian Stamps” was pre sented by Miss Joyce Noble. It was unanimously conceded to be one of the finest papers ever given before this circle. Master Fred Winder occupied the chair. Arrangements were made for the wind-up social to be held on November 16. There remains only one more meeting for the 1929 session, that on November 4, “German, French and Belgian Stamps,” by Eric Ryan. All members are asked to attend this meeting, as the final plans for the social will be arranged. The following information which was inquired for has been supplied by a friend who was resident in India at one time: 12 pies or 4 pice equal 1 anna. 16 annas equal 1 rupee. 1 rupee equals Is 4d. 1 anna equals Id. 1 pice equals Id.
