MINISTERIAL. The Hon George Forbes, Minister of Lands, arrived from the north this morning. Mr A. F. Wright returned to Christchurch yesterday from Wellington. Sir Truby King was a passenger from the north in this morning’s ferry steamer. Mr D. A. Aiken, general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, left Wellington yesterday on a motor tour in the Hawke’s Bay district. He was accompanied by Mrs Aiken. Mr A. G. Henderson was a passenger by last night’s ferry steamer, en route to Auckland: Mr J. Mathieson has been elected president of the Christchurch Tramway Employees’ Union. The degree of Fellowship of the College of Surgeons of Australasia has been conferred on Dr F. F. A. Ulrich, of Timaru. Mr Arthur Lilly, A.R.C.0., will act as vocal, instrumental and elocutionary judge at the fifth annival festival of the Temuka district competitions, commencing on October 28. Mr J. A. Flesher, chairman of the Christchurch Tramway Board, and Mr F. Thompson, general manager, returned to Christchurch to-day after attending the Parliamentary Special Committee on Transport in Wellington.

Mr W. Sells, managing director of the D.1.C., Wellington, arrived from the north this morning.

H Commodore Geoffrey Blake, D. 5.0., R.N., accompanied by his officers, intends inspecting the Christchurch Divisional Headquarters of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on October 21. •

At last night's meeting of the executive committee of the South Island Motor Union the chairman, Mr H. C. Harley, extended a welcome to two new members, Messrs J. L. Danks and R. H. Parker.

The professorial board of the University of Otago his selected Messrs Noel S. Woods and James Campbell Dakin to be the candidates for Rhodes scholarships. Both are arts students, bom in Otaro province, and intend to complete thsir B.A. degrees this year. Mr Woods is twenty-one and Mr Dakin twenty.

At last night’s meetijg of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, a presentation was made to tae retiring secretary, Mr G. G. Lockwc»d. The president, Mr R. Beattie, poke briefly, stating that the centre ould attribute its present strong positin to his efforts. Other members apportted the president in his remarks Mr Lockwood briefly replied. A presentation was also made to the pat president, Mr W. C. Flewellen, for tie work he had done for the club.
