ARCHDEACON WILLIAMS IS BISHOP OF WAIAPU.
Per Press Association. NAPIER, October 10. The venerable Archdeacon Herbert Williams to-night was unanimously elected by a special Synod of the Waiapu diocese, as Bishop to succeed the Right Rev Dr W. W. Sedgwick, whose resignation takes effect on December 31. Archdeacon Williams is the third member of his family to hold that high office. His grandfather, the Right Rev William Williams, was the first Bishop of Waiapu and continued to hold office til! he died in 1876. The Archdeacon’s father, the Right Rev William Leonard Williams, was Bishop of Waiapu from 1894 (following Bishop Stuart) till he died. It is a happy circumstanc that his son should also be chosen to fill the same post, thus completing three generations of episcopal duty, surely a unique record, for any family. The three bishops were also united in another aspect. They were all Maori scholars and all in turn laboured at the work of Maori lexiocography.
