Chide Wins Big Handicap At Dunedin Spring Races.

SATISFY SCORES IN M’LEAN STAKES, DEFEATING GOOD FIELD OF EIGHTEEN

(Special to the “Star.**) DUNEDIN, October 10. The Dunedin Jockey Club was favoured with glorious weather for the opening of the spring meeting, and the attendance was well up to the average. The course was hard but in excellent order. The fields were large and there was some excellent racing. Chide registered a good performance when he won the Mosgiel Handicap, and Silver Paper won the Electric Handicap like a high class horse. Satisfy, the winner of the M’Lean Stake, is a very smart youngster, as there were several good ones behind her. Dutch Money put up a firstclass trial for the Dunedin Guineas in winning the Maungatua Handicap. Racing opened with the Spring Hurdle Handicap, for which eight acceptors lined up. Kapuna had a slight call in the betting over Carinthia, with Beauty Light also well backed. Taramoa and Carinthia led to the first hurdle, where the former made a slow jump, Guncase and Antrim Boy joining Carinthia in the lead. Taramoa soon regained the lead, but passing the stand Antrim Boy joined him with Carinthia, Guncase, Beauty Light and Kapuna handy. Carinthia was showing the way to Antrim Boy and Taramoa at the six furlong post, and at the second last hurdle Beauty Light, Guncase and Kapuna were not far away. Carinthia drew away at the home turn, entering the straight with a lead of several lengths. Antrim Boy put in a fast late run. but Carinthia, going easily, beat him by a length. Taramoa was five lengths away, with Beauty Light, Guncase and Kapuna following in that order. The form of the first two horses worked out well on their running at Geraldine, while Beauty Light also ran well up to expectations, but the extra going was in Carinthia’s favour. Taramoa ran a decent race, but the distance found him out. Grand Lupin tailed the field for over a mile and then was pulled up. He broke a fetlock and was destroyed. The scratching of Calham, Tane and Wig Wag left a field of twenty-one for the Trial Stakes. Sailing Home, Aranoah and Comique were the popular fancies. There was some delay at the start, Bellicose being the chief offender, though Solmuri and Positive also showed a disinclination to line up at the barrier. Bellicose was left. Sailing Home jumped out smartly, with Solmar, Straightcourse, Aranoah and Comique in close attendance, but at the end of a furlong Solmar took charge, while Sailing Home dropped back a few places. Racing round the home turn Solmar, Aranoah and Straightcourse were showing the way to a big bunch, and they ran like this to the straight. Solmar then retired, while Top Speed, Jock o' Hazeldean and Solmuri started to move up. Straightcourse drew out from Aranoah at the distance, but Top Speed, finishing strongly, beat Straightcourse by half a length. Aranoah was two lengths away, with Solmar and Jock o’ Hazeldean next, followed by Bellbird and Sailing Home. The winner showed fair form at Kurow, and he may make a useful hack. Straightcourse ran a solid race, making amends for a disappointing effort at Ashburton. Aranoah failed to stay. Solmuri, Jock o' Hazeldean, Bellbird and Sailing Home were all running on at the finish after being outpaced. Sailing Home in particular will do better very soon, as he met a lot of trouble on the journey. Comique had her chance but could not hold her place. The scratching of Handsome and El Nido left sixteen starters for the Maungatua Handicap. Meprisant was a pronounced favourite, while after a gap Dutch Money had a good margin over Blue Metal, Disorder and Town Major w!jo were evenly fancied. Battle Screen and Lucky Light got off badly. Tembroney began smartly from Dutch Money, Stealth and Blue Metal, but at the end of a furlong Dutch Money was out clear, with Tembroney, Blue Metal, Salmo Salar and Topere leading the others. A little further on Disorder started to move up, while Town Major, after being near the tail of the field in the early stages, also improved his position. Racing round the home turn at this stage Dutch Money was showing out well clear of a bunch, in which Tembroney, Blue Metal, Salmo Salar, Topere and Disorder were prominent. Topere retired when the straight was reached, while Meprisant and Some Toff were travelling well though some distance back. Salmo Salar was done with at the distance, and in a good finish Dutch Money hung on to win decisively by over a length. Tembroney beat Blue Metal by a head for second place, while Town Major, who came with a strong late run, was a neck away just in front of Disorder. Two lengths further back Some Toff and Meprisant headed the others. The performance of Dutch Money was an exceptionally good one, as she was giving away weight to all her three-year-old rivals. Tembroney and Blue Metal were in the picture all the way. Disorder covered a lot of ground. Meprisant began slowly and never lpoked dangerous, though he finished well.

got out smartly. Rin Tin Tin and Waving Corn went on in front of Silver Paper, but at the home turn Aspiring was also on the scene, with Royal Saxon hand}'. Rin Tin Tin collapsed at the entrance to the straight, and a little further on Aspiring also dropped out. while Red Heckle and Gold Tinge were moving up. Silver Paper was well clear at the distance, and stalling off a challenge from Red Heckle he won by a length. Saxon was two lengths away, with Waving Corn, Gold Tinge and Black Duke together next. The winner’s performance was that of a high-class horse. Pie was never far from the front and he won in impressive style. Red Heckle put up a good performance to finish second, and he came from a long way back. For the Mosgiel Handicap, Taboo, Malmsey and Membo were withdrawn, leaving a field of six. Chide was a hot favourite, with Pink Note easily second fancy. Circulation took charge at the start, leading Evening, Money Mine ’and Chide out of the straight. Circulation was two lengths in front at the seven furlong post, and a furlong further on she had increased her advantage to three lengths. Then Chide moved up to second place just in front of Evening and Money Mine, but Circulation was still striding along freely with a lead of three lengths. They ran like this to the straight, where Chide made a forward move, while Pink Note was closing up from the back. Chide soon joined Circulation and went on to win as he liked by over a length. In an exciting finish for the places Circulation beat Pink Note by a neck, with Evening a head away. Money Mine collapsed in the straight, finishing with Black Mint several lengths in the rear. This was Chide’s second win this season in as many starts. He won without an effort and lie is going to be dangerous in important events, including the New Zealand Cup. Pink Note ran a sound race and will soon improve. Circulation registered one of her best performances.

The eighteen on the card lined up for the M’Lean Stakes, the first two-year-old race of the season in the South Island. A 1 Jolson, a good-look-ing Limond colt trained at Wingatui, was a pronounced favourite, while the Spoon-The Grisha bracket was a little better fancied than Tray Bond, with Satisfy fourth fancy. Tray Bond on the rails caused some trouble at the start and lost some ground at the rise of the barrier. Spoon, Tea Party and Tracsono were smartest out, but Tray Bond ran through very fast, joining Spoon in the lead before going a furlong, with Tea Party and Tracsono handy*, while after a gap A 1 Jolson was prominent in the next bunch. They raced without change to the home turn, where Tea Party fan wide. Once in the straight Satisfy started to move up. Spoon had the measure of Tray Bond a hundred yards from the post, but Satisfy wore her down and won by a neck. Tray Bond was two lengths away, just in front of A 1 Jolson and Tracsono, who were together. The winner, who is a sister to Battle Colours, is a smart filly and she stayed on very solidly. Spoon ran a really good race. Tray Bond showed great speed but was tiring at the finish.

There were nine starters for the October Handicap, High Gear being the only scratching. Honeycomb was a hot favourite, with Membo easily the best backed of the others. Sudden Storm and Latin Quarter were first out, and they led Royal Game, Membo and Taboo for three furlongs, when Membo began to drift back. Sudden Storm and Latin Quarter were still showing the way to Royal Game and Taboo at the entrance to the straight. A little further on Taboo commenced a run and, getting through on the rails, he joined in a great finish, which resulted in Taboo beating Latin Quarter in the last stride by a head, with Sudden Storm another head away Two lengths further back came Wingatui, with First Aid, Honeycomb and Membo next. Taboo is usually more at home on a soft track, but in this race, despite the hard ground, he hit out in good style. The Southland gelding, Latin Quarter, who is highly thought of, ran a solid race and should be a winner before long. Sudden Storm also put up a good performance, only failing in the last couple of strides. Honeycomb seemed to be sore and never got into the picture. The day’s racing was concluded with the Taioma Handicap. Impertinence, Straightcourse. Rastus, Jock o’ Hazeldean and Top Speed were scratched, leaving a field of fifteen. The Full Flight-Inevitable bracket was favourite, with Desert Song, Mount Boa and Ell Boa also fancied. Dumblane led out of the barrier, but soon dropped back, Assemble and Dry Area going on from Wig Warn, with Inevitable, Ell Boa and Desert Song next. They raced without much change to the straight, where Dry Area and Wig Wag were beaten. Assemble was left in charge, but had to meet a couple of stout challenges. There was an exciting finish, Ell Boa getting up in the last stride to beat Inevitable by a head, while Assemble waS another head away. After a gap Maretta was fourth, with Dumblane and Crossbow almost on terms with her. Ell Poa is only a novice. She won at Kurow ; last week, and she is improving with every race. Inevitable and Assemble are smart hacks worth keeping in mind. Mount Boa began slowly a. d never became prominent. miiiiiimnirmnniinnniiiiniiiniiiiniiiiniiiniiiiitiiiiiiiHiiimiimniiiiiinimiim ,

The scratching of Rapier, Meadow Lark, Night Lad and Caterpillar left a field of ten for the Electric Handicap. The Silver Paper-Aspiring bracket was a strong first fancy, with Red Heckle and Waving Corn disputing second position.
