Mr and Mrs Philip Hollander have returned to Christchurch from Sydney. Mrs H. H. Wise, Dunedin, is the guest of Mrs Moray-Smith, Rugby Street. Mrs Arthur Johnston, Greymouth, is visiting friends in Christchurch. Mrs M. Thomas (Timaru) is at the Clarendon Hotel. Recent arrivals at the United Service Hotel include Mr and Mrs S. Kifkcaldie. Miss Anstey, Craighead Street, Timaru, is visiting Christchurch. Mr and Mrs J. H. Carter, of Wellington, are the guests of Mrs Abernethy, Kaikorai, Christchurch. Mrs W. A. Moore has returned to Timaru from a visit to Wellington and Christchurch. Mrs J. W. Bridgeman, of Christchurch, is staying at the Grand,Hotel, Auckland. Mr and Mrs J. C. Peacock, and Mr and Mrs Illott, of Wellington, are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mrs Bagley, Dunedin, is at present spending a holiday with Dr and Mrs R. A Bagley, Rakaia. Mr and Mrs J. D. Simpson (Papanui) left last night on a visit to Australia. Mr and Mrs T. H. Pelling, Edinburgh Street, have returned to Christchurch after a visit to Auckland. Mrs Hanmer Atkinson is visiting Christchurch and is the guest of Mrs W. Atkinson, Queen’s Avenue, Fendalton. Mrs J. Macßae, and Miss Downward, of Masterton, arrived in Christchurch this morning and are staying at Warner’s Hotel. Mr and Mrs A. H. Mackrell, Invercargill, are visitors to Christchurch and are staying at the United Service Hotel. The usual weekly cabaret dance will be held at Dixieland on Saturday night. The Dixieland orchestra will provide a special programme of music. Invitations have been issued by Miss Marian Woodhouse, L.R.A.M., for a song recital to be given by her students and herself on October 17. Mrs T. Grant, Highbank, left on Thursday for Kaikoura to be the guest of Mr and Mrs Foster on a motor tour of Blenheim and Nelson, via the West Coast districts, returning via Otira. Mrs W. Ballantyne and Miss Jean, Ballantyne. who are at present touring on the Continent, will return by the Orama. They expect to arrive in New Zealand by Christmas. Miss Mae Hall, Fendalton, who returned from Honolulu by the Niagara, is staying with her brother, Mr Douglas Hall, Taumarunui, before returning to Christchurch. Latest arrivals at the Hotel Federal include: Mr B. Yeates (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Chapman (Nelson), Mrs Donald Robertson (Havelock North), Mr A. J. Hollis (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Le Comte (Christchurch). A very large number of correspondents responded to the appeal of “ Anxious Mother ” for a recipe. In each case the recipes sent to the “ Times ” have been forwarded to “Anxious Mother,” who will probably find among them the particular one she sought. The friends of Mrs H. K Bisley, Weka Street, who, since leaving Christchurch two years ago, has been a patient in the Napier Hospital, will be pleased to know that she has recovered her health and is at present staying with her mother, Mrs O. Dean, Napier. The Belfast “Y” branch held its monthly meeting in thS Methodist Church. Mr Deans, of the Aranui branch,, was present, also Miss Mac Lay, “Y” organiser, who gave a lecture on “Compositions of Water.” Mrs Mac Lean then read a report on the recent convention held at Waimate. Miss G. Clarke was elected president for the ensuing year.
Dr and Mrs R. S. Orbell (Oamaru), Lady Roberts (Lower Hutt), Mr and Mrs T. R. Bloomfield (Auckland), Mr and Mrs Shallcrass (Greymouth), Mrs Ilowley and Mrs W. H. Webb (Timaru), Mrs A. B. Martin (Martinborough), Miss Johnston (Wellington) and Mr and Mrs H. S. Fenwick (Dunedin) are staying at the United Service Hotel.
Recent guests at the Franz Josef Glacier, Waiho Gorge, include: Captain Angus (Greymouth), Mr Baty (Greymouth), Mr Inglis (Auckland), Mr Gillespie (Christchurch), Mr J. Renton (Hokitika), Miss Fieber (U.S.A.), Mr Philp (Christchurch), Mr S. White (Greymouth), Mr and Mrs A. Johnston (Greymouth), Mr Thomas (Grey mouth), Mr Price (Perth, W.A.), Mr Charters (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Tresider (Invercargill), Messrs Tainui and Mason (Arahura), and Messrs Carr and Berry (Christchurch).
At the monthly meeting of the Society for Protection of Women and Children, the following members were present: The President (Rev C. A. Fraer) in the chair, committee, Mesdames F. Biltcliff, T. Tomlinson, E. Roberts, J. Blackaby, Revs C. Perry, W. Baumber, Mr C. R. N. Mackie and the secretary (Miss Cardale). Apologies for absence were received from Adjutant Combs, Mrs T. E. Taylor and Mr J. A. S. Wait (hon treasurer). The matter of women police was further discussed and the committee decided to ask the Minister of Justice to sanction women police. The treasurer submitted the financial statement. Miss de Veaux reported subscriptions and donations were still coming in well. The secretary reported 235 miscellaneous, 319 callers at the office, and 108 visits had been attended to during the month.
