FROM THE “STAR” SIXTY YEARS AGO.

ADVERTISEMENTS AND NEWS OF SEPT. 25. 1869. NOTICE. A conveyance will leave Messrs Matson and Co.’s office. Cathedral Square, at 10.15 a.m., on Monday, September 27, for the Great Clearing Sale at Mr Matson’s residence, Deice, Papanui. « « 55 Magisterial.—At the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court this morning, Alex R was brought up before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M., charged with having been drunk and disorderly whilst in charge of a horse and vehicle yesterday afternoon. The horse, it appeared, took him direct into the Police Depot Yard, and it was when arrested that he became disorderly. K « K Christ’s College Grammar School.— The annual sports of this school are to be held on Michaelmas Day (Wednesday the 29th inst). The programme includes races, both walking and running, of various distances, as well as fives and jumping matches. The races will come off on the ground of the United Canterbury Cricket Club, at ten o’clock, and the fives and jumping at the College, at three. « Athletic Club.—An attempt is to be made during the ensuing week to form an athletic club in Christchurch. The principal object at present in view is to secure a practice and racing ground for velocipedeans, but it is intended to incorporate other branches of athletic exercises as well. These will be developed according to the progress of the club, and there is little doubt but that it will be satisfactory. Lyttelton Boating Club.—The annual general meeting was held at the Shades, on Friday evening. The following gentlemen were elected members: Captain Gibson, Messrs Brewer, Packard, D. Mills and F. Graham The following gentlemen were elected officers: President, Captain Gibson; vicepresident, Mr H'. R. Webb; commodore, Mr A. Cuff; secretary and treasurer. Mr W. Packard; committee, Messrs D. Davis, D. Carr, J. S. Leggett, C. W. H. Woledge, W. Cameron, D. Mills, S. Sinclair and E. W. Roper. K 55 55 From a Leader.—The market price of flour in Christchurch early yesterday morning was £l3 10s to £l4 per ton. In the space of an hour or so, it had jumped up to £l6 per ton—a rise of £2. What was the cause of this? Telegrams had been received notifying an advance in Melbourne of £1 lOd per ton. That was the whole secret But, if millers inMelbourne, paying 8s per bu9hel for their wheat, can sell their flour at £lB 10s, what in the of all that’s monstrous can justify our millers in charging £l6 per ton for flour when they can buy their wheat at 4s 6d, or at the most 5s per bushel. If they preserved the Melbourne ratio between the price of wheat and the price of flour they would be selling the latter at £ll 11s 3d per ton, supposing them to pay 5s a bushel for wheat. But we dare say no one would grudge them, say £l3 td £l4 per ton 55 55 *■» From a report on the activides of the . Acclimatisation Society.—Tile buck deer !had recently become more troublesome than ever in damaging the fence and worrying the other animals, causing them to escape. It had now been removed into a separate enclosure. A suggestion was made that all the rabbits in the Domain enclosure should be killed on account of their liability to escape, and that it was equally the interest of the society to protect the plants. The question as to importation of hares was deferred for the present. Instructions were given to the Curator to get rid of all the rabbits as 60on as possible. A resolution was proposed by Mr Boys that all the Angora goats be sold. Mr Fereday pointed out that the damage caused by their escaping was in reality to be attributed to the deer. The goats had been a source of revenue to the Society After some discussion it was decided that all the goats be sold by auction.
