Hornby Reach League Final.

SEMI-FINAL PLAYED IN SENIOR GRADE. The Sydenham and Ilornby teams met this afternoon in the semi-final of the Canterbury Rugby League’s senior grade competition. The winners will meet Addington in the final next Saturday. ______ SYDENHAM V. HORNBY. Several passes were dropped tn flic opening movements, iu which Sydenham gained ground. Reid and Warr made good saves. Twice the leather, aided by the wind, went over the dead-ball line. Hard and tight play hung about midfield until King handed the dummy and reached the Hornby twenty-five. Warr delighted the crowd with some clever side-stepping, and Hornby were in Sydenham territory at the end of the first quarter.

W. Davis just missed a long penalty goal. M. Davis and Lamberton. with Mackie contesting them, carried the ball at toe nearly the length of the fie 1«1, where Davis brought Mackie down. To the other end streaked Smith and Howison, but Davidson saved well. Hornby looked in line for a score when W. Davis followed through, but Fraser kicked out. The Hornby backs swung into concerted action for the first time, but Sydenham foiled the movement near the line. M. Davis was dazed after a hard eollision with a Hornby man. Then H. -A Vivian secured from loose play, and, cutting In, scored a good try, which W. Davis narrowly failed to convert. Just before half-time N. Vivian ran through with the ball at toe. beat King, recovered the leather and scored in the corner. W. Davis converted. The scores then Hornby 8. Sydenham 0. Hqrnby opened out at the start of the. second spell, and Davidson saved a score by grassing Mackie near the corner. On the other wing. Warr got as close to a score as had Mackie. A loose rush by Sydenham gave Cliff Woods a chance to turn defence into attack with a Jinky run which went past nearly all the opposition. Howison carried on the good work, but Sydenham put in some effective spoiling work. Play was in midfield at the end of the third &i>ell. Woodgate exercised himself in an open space, and the movement looked dangerous. However, like many another, it broke down. A bout of iuter-passing between Smith and Howison ended in Woodgate scoring. Lamberton opened Sydenham’s scoring account with a try after an interception, and Fraser converted on the call of time. Final scores: HORNBY 11 SYDENHAM 5 Referee: Mr G. H. Brittenden.
