WHARF AT WESTPORT IS SAID TO LOOK LIKE A HUGE BOW.

News of Westport’s state after its terrifying experience on Monday morning is coming through in various forms. A letter to a Christchurch x resident, which was brought over by aeroplane from the stricken area, told about the plight of the town. The first shocks threw everybody into a state of nervous apprehension, and there were many cases of men and women stampeding from buildings. The writer says: “I thought the whole place was going up in smoke when the Post Office crashed down.” He states that the railway tracks were twisted and broken, once straight lines being tossed about and curved greatly out of alignment. The wharf was shifted and now resembled a huge bow.
