Lyttelton; Cashmere B v. Ford Motors. Senior Grade Matches. Sumner were expected to put up a good match against Sydenham last week, and it duly eventuated. Though Sumner won by one point and put on the good total of 544, they were fortunate in that when Sydenham were in a winning position one of their members failed to complete his target and was penalised ten points. Nevertheless, Sumner are shooting well, as their last two match totals show. Sydenham are not having the best of luck, but with eleven matches to fire no doubt they will make it very interesting for the opposing teams. For the winners, S. Craw 69, G. Hines 69, C. Hart 69, J. Edmonds 69, C. Timbrell 68, J. Ellison 68, and for the losers S. O. Hay 70, D. Low 70, J. Bills 69, and C. Jessop 68 all shot well. a k m Another close and exciting match was that between Railway and Cashmere, when the former also won by the narrow margin of one point, the totals being 545 to 544. Rail-way opened much better than Cashmere, putting on 69, 67, 70 and 68 for their first four men dotvn. The Hills team opened with a 68, followed by two scores of 65 each, and then improved a little with a 68, but the next man crashed with a 62. Railway did not maintain their opening form, notching four scores of 67 each in rapid succession. This gave Cashmere a chance of wiping off the deficit, which they nearly did, with two scores of 68 a 69 and a possible. When the last two men—W. Crossan (Railway) and H. Haworth (Cashmere)—went down Railway were one point up. Both men shot well, notching 69 each, leaving Railway winners by one point after an exciting finish. F.. Sullivan 70, W. Sullivan 69, W. Crossan 69. 11. Thompson 68 and L. Lilley 68. 'All shot well for the winners. For Cashmere, D. M'Donald 70, H. Haworth 69, W. Guy, sen., 69, A. Martin 68, L. Ragg 68 and G. Naylor 68 were the most consistent.
The junior competition was noted for surprise wins by weaker teams. Most of the matches were closely contested with very narrow margins between the contestants. Kaiapoi Woollen, last year’s winners, had to go hard all the match to defeat Heathcote by three points. The latter shot much better than usual and at one period looked to have a winning chance. For Kaiapoi Woollen A. Duggan 6S, shot best, while R. Poulsen 69 and Ashworth 68 shot well for Heathcote. ez :*: 55 W. 11. Harris Ltd., the leaders in the competition, met their first defeat at the hands of Cashmere when the latter won with the good total of 541 to 533. W. 11. Harris Ltd. are capable of much better totals, but evidently Avere having a night off. Cashmere are again shooting up to form and should be the leaders at the end of the first round, which concludes this week. P. Cole 69, C. Barker 69, W. J. Gabb 6S, H. Judkins 68, E. Copplestone 68, all shot well for the winning team. For the losers L Harris 68 and H. Bleasdale 68 were the only members to shoot up to practice form. The Christchurch Working Men’s Club surprised the strong "Returned Soldiers’ team last week by winning with a two-points margin. After the “Club’s” indifferent displays of recent weeks the match seemed an easy win for the Returned Soldiers. With half the match completed the “Soldiers” were several points up owing to two of the “Club” team losing 10 points each for putting shots on wrong targets. The unlooked for then happened and instead of the R.S.A. side shooting their usual scores several crashed. 11. Biggins 69, F. Williamson 68 and Glue 6S helped considerably tOAvards the Avin. C. Farley 68 and R. Stringer 68 were the best in the loser’s total. :*
Burwood surprised by defeating a much stronger team in Sydenham. This was another of the closely-contest-ed matches, Burwood winning by one point. Sydenham shot much below form. J. Craig 68 and P. Guy 68 being the only two to retain match form. A Goodhind 68, J. Partridge 68, and V. Pankhurst 68 were three good scorers for Burwood. President’s Cup. Lyttelton retained their lead with Returned Soldiers at the conclusion of last week's matches. They are shooting most consistently and will be hard fo defeat for the championship. They easily accounted for Cashmere B, winning by 15 points. The best scores lor Lyttelton were A. W. Burbery 68, E. Whitford 68, A. Burbery sen. 86, and L. Taylor 67. W. Guy jun. 67 was top scorer for Cashmere B. Wards’ Ladies are still shooting well and by defeating Railway by 25 points are only one point behind the leader in the competition. This is a fine achievement for the ladies, who have AA’on four and lost two in the six matches fired. Mrs L. Harper 67, Mrs Smith 67, Miss C. Johnson 67 and Miss B. Johnson 67 shot well in their last week’s win. A. Rayner 66 was the best score for Railway. Ford Motors quite excelled themselves week against W. H. Harris, Ltd. For a first year club a victory Avith a 535 total was a splendid achievement and the members are to be congratulated on their performance. A. Brunning 68, L. Willis 68, J. Haworth 68, Allan 68 and E. Vincent 67 were worthy of mention for the winners, while W. Jackson 68 and C. Pitt 67 shot well for W. 11. Harris, Ltd. Like the Avinners the losers are mostly all first year shots and both teams will benefit by experience.
Returned Soldiers again shot well in defeating Marist Old Boys by 532 to 521. The latter are not shooting consistently this season, having put on really good totals at times and then notching poor ones and for no apparent reason. For the winners 11. Brake 68, W. Riches 67, A. Aldersley 67, Oakley 67 shot well. L. Blackler 69, R. Hurley 67 were the tAvo top scorers for the losers. The former shot exceptionally well, being one off the possible.
After some rather poor displays Cashmere A again struck form last week by putting on the good total of 533, against NeAv Brighton Ladies, winning by ten points. The ladies are not shooting quite up to last year’s form, but are likely to come to light when least expected. For the winners A. A. Taylor 70. A. Purves sen. 69, and V. Guy 68 were good scores. Mrs 11. Ragg 68 and Miss Park 67 were good shoots for the ladies’ team. Club Notes. The Cashmere Club fired the tenth shoot of the season for the hotty championship last evening. G. E. Nayior. F. Judkins and D. M’Donald tied with a possible each. In the shoot off Naj'lor notched another 70 and won. The leaders Avith last evening’s scores are:—L. Ragg 413, F. Judkins 413, G. E. Naylor 412, G.
