LOCAL BURGESSES HOLD MEETINGS.
The Addington Burgesses’ Association met last night, when Mr W. IJ Griffiths presided over a good attendance of members. The Aranui Burgesses' Association accepted a challenge for a euchre tour nament for the Reece Challenge Cup It was decided to play Aranui on July 1 and Richmond on July 29. It was also decided to play a friendly game with Aranui on July 17. An invita tion from the St Albans association for a friendly game of cards and billiards was accepted. RICHMOND. The Richmond Burgesses’ Association met last evening, Mr J. Dougan presiding. The chairman reported that the City Council had agreed to make improvements to a dangerous corner in' North Avon Road. The secretary (Mr C. E. Brown) stated that Councillor F. R. Cooke had agreed to inspect the footpaths and bridges in the district. It was reported that the association had entered for the burgesses’ progressive euchre competition for the Reece Challenge Cup. A copy of the rules governing the competition W’as received from the Addington association. The executive recommended that the return card match against the St Albans association should be played in the Druids’ Hall, Avalon Street, on July 15. The secretary reported that it had been decided to offer a challenge cup for the next district garden competitions. The following donations had been promised:—W. Taylor % £1 Is, W. Wigglesw’orth 10s 6d, E. C. Brown ss. A canvass of the district for donations would be made. The United Burgesses' Association wrote asking for views on the follow ing remits: “That the Christchurch City Council be asked to frame a bylaw prohibiting pedestrians from passing in front of stationary trams.’’ “That the Christchurch Tramway Board be asked to stop trams between intersections instead of at street cor ners as at present.’’
“ That the City Council be asked to enforce the by-law requiring vehicles, especially bicycles, to keep as close to the kerbing as possible.’’ It was decided to suppo the first and third remits and to reject the second one. Mr W. Sweeney complained that ‘-he morning mail was not delivered in North Parade until one o’clock. It was decided to bring the matter under the notice of the Postmaster-General. A member said that a traffic inspect or should be posted at the corner of North Avon Road and North Parade for a couple of days to make motorists observe the rule of passing round the traffic dome at that point. Mr Sweeney said that an inspector had informed him that in future of fending motorists would be prosecuted At the conclusion of the meeting. Councillor P. W. Sharpe gave an inter esting lantern lecture on “ A Motor Trip through Great Britain.”
