WOULD REMOVE TRAM SHELTER.
BODIES CONCERNED ADOPT PROPOSALS REGARDING SQUARE.
A conference of representatives of the City Council, the Tramway Board and the Save the Square Committee yesterday discussed the position created by the Supreme Court judgment in regard to Cathedral Square', and agreed to recommend the three bodies to adopt the following proposals, as a reasonable basis of settlement:— (1) The present tramway shelter to be dispensed with, and provision made for erecting a shelter, accord ing to plans submitted, on the Colombo Street highway, the struc ture to be about ten feet high, this to be the only building erected in the Square. (2) The present men’s and women’s conveniences to be amalgamated, in order to provide more adequate accommodation for men, entirely new’ provision to be made for women. Under this scheme, there will be a roadway twenty-eight feet wide in front of the Cathedral; west of that roadway a shelter; west of that shelter two lines of trams, one to take tramcars going one way, and the other to take tramcars going the other way; west of the tram lines another shelter; west of that shelter a roadway twentv-eight feet wide; and then the Godley Statue site. The Save the Square Committee will meet at 3 p.m. to-day to discuss these proposals. The conference will meet again on Wednesday. The following representatives attended yesterday’s conference:— City Council—The Mayor (the Rev J l . K. Archer) and Mr D. G. Sullivan M.P. Tramway Board—Messrs J. A. Flesher, \V. Ilavward and IT. Pearce. Save the Square Committee—Dr Thacker and Messrs W. Machin and G. Harper. Mr A. R. Galbraith, City Engineer, and Mr F. Thompson, general manager of the tramways, attended the conference.
