OLD BOYS SHOULD WIN TO-MORROW.

But Christchurch Often Play Game Out Of Box.

BOTH SIDES ARE KEEN RIVALS, AND FAST GAME IS EXPECTED.

THE GAME between Christchurch and Old Boys tomorrow holds big possibilities. In tlie first place, it will depend on this match as to whether the competition in the senior grade will be a certain thing for Old Boys or not; and in the second, it should produce for the Rugbyloving public a good, fast exhibition of the code. The two clubs have been keen rivals in the senior competition for years past, and there has always been great interest in the meeting of the two teams. Both clubs can be relied upon to field teams that are eager, experienced and capable, and the contest, which ever side the points at the final whistle favour, should provide a close and interesting game.

Old Boys are well ahead in the competition. Both they and Christchurch were unbeaten till Merivale inflicted a decisive defeat on Christchurch, and since then Christchurch have gone down unexpectedly to both Lin wood and Albion. That means nothing as rar as it concerns the form the Christchurch team is capable of showing. It really means that that team i. liable to have an oft day. In one of those matches Mullan, the Christchurch first five-eighth, was injured, and that had a great effect, and in the game against Albion the five-eighths. M Gregor and M’Autiffe, both good men. had not played in the Christchurch team before during the season. This Saturday the five-eighths will be more accus- j tomed to working in together and with ; their outsiders. Therefore things should go better in the Christchurch back division. Up to this stage, the weakness in the Christchurch team has been at second five-eighths and centre. The second five-eighths position, now filled by M'Auliffe, should occasion no more worry for Christchurch supporters, but the three-quarter line is doubtful.

Should the centre have an oft day, and fail to use judgment in choosing the times to feed his wings and when to attempt to break through or kick, then Christchurch will have a handicap to overcome. The Old Boys team, whether they have their strongest team available or not, will be a strong combination They showed last Saturday, against Varsity, that, while the absence of men like Carleton and Hay might detract from the brilliance of the team, they have men who can step in and make the working combination sound*. That is where Old Boys are very strong. They do not miss passes, and their handling is good. Each man seems to know the game of the man inside him, and there are

no silly mistakes or throwing away of opportunities. According -to all conceptions of form in the previous games, Old Boys should win. They have had two very narrow wins, for when they played Merivale they looked like going down to that surprising team during the last few minutes of the game, and against Albion they did not score as many tries as the losing team. Yet Old Boys are consistent, and they know the game and play it, and with the material they have, one can safely say that the team that plays them will have to produce exceptional form to win. Christchurch are capable of producing that exceptional form, vet, with their defeats by Albion and Linwood against their record, it is extremely uncertain that they will do so. Practically the only wins Christchurch have had this season have been against the inferior sides. That includes their win against Varsity, for at that time the 1 students were below senior standard. West, Technical and Sydenham have contributed towards the points Christchurch have put up. and that means nothing. People will say that Old

Boys had two lucky wins, but they were wins nevertheless, and on the play fairly well deserved. Therefore, the finger points to Old Boys. Yet football is every whit as uncertain as cric2<et, and there is the splendid Christchurch pack to be taken into consideration. If they can beat the Old Boys forwards for the ball, it will make all the difference, for Old Boys are confessedly a back team, though their forwards are a fair ly useful lot. However the result goes, the game will be a good one, and the state of the competition will lend it added interest. The teams chosen are:— Old Boys—Harris, Merritt, Carleton. Jacobs, Innes, Hay, Dailey, Page, Burrows, Clark, Baird, Harris, Eli. . Porterfield, Foley. Emergencies: Mehr tens, Hastie, Harper and Harris. * Christchurch—Mills, Meikle, Robil Hard, Hart, M’Auliffe, MGregor, Mui- | lan. Scrimshaw, Cottrell, Taylor, Manchester, Rogers, M'Duff, Wilders, Galbraith. Emergencies: Stewart, Lawson. Soanes, Stephenson, Frater. Other Games. , There will be a good game on the south ground at the Park, where Linwood will meet Albion. Albion are really the better side, in so much as I their strength in the back division is undoubtedly superior, but there is no knowing to just what heights the Lin wood forwards will rise, and their backs have shown that they can score tries as well as put up a resolute de fence. Albion should win by a small margin. On the west ground, Merivale will cake-walk all over Sydenham. At the Show Grounds, Technical will t meet West West should win on the | strength of their better backs, but'the I Technical side possess fairly solid forj wards, and the game \yiil be very | closely fought. | TO-MORROW’S MATCHES. “ A WEAK UNION.”

TROUBLE IN TIMARU. At Monday night’s meeting of the South Canterbury Rugby Union, when two players were brought before the committee for misconduct on the field, those present were treated to a free talk on jiu jitsu and other matters (says a report in the “Timaru Post”) The referee (Mr A. J. 11. Dow) notified that he ordered off E. Fairbrother and IT. Hogg for misconduct on the ground. Both players and the referee appeared before the meeting. The referee said that the incident had happened near the 25yds line of the Zingari territory. He had not seen the incident, his attention having been drawn to it by remarks of players. „ Both pleaded not guilty. Hogg said he had tackled Fairbrother, and he had received blows on the shoulder. He remained silent standing. Fairbrother: Sit down; you do not need to stand up there like a silly ass.: Continuing. Fairbrother said that Hogg had put a holt on to him. which no man would put on him. In a few years, he said, there would tie no attendance at Rugby matches, for all old olayers would be able to look over the fence: they would have stretched necks A policeman should not be allowed to play football if he was'going to put. holts on. Hogg was on top of him when the incident, occurred, and he f

(Fairbrother) did not know what he was ordered off for. The referee had controlled a good game, and he (Fairbrother) was quite willing to take hi? medicine. The referee said he did not know any of the players concerned. In answer to a question, he said he could not say if one player was on top of the other. They were struggling on the ground, and the ball was about twenty-five yards up the field. He saw very little of the incident. Mr A. Tyson asked where the ball was when the incident occurred. The chairman (addressing Fairbrother) : What started it? Continuing", Fairbrother said it was a late tackle on both ‘-ides. The ball had been near both. Hogg said that the incident happen ed from a passing rush. He had comfe across and tackled Fairbrother. Fairbrother: He used a holt learnt in the police force. It was put on me and I broke away from it. Hogg: He has said a good deal; he doesn’t say what he went off for. Mr A. B. Rowlands asked if Hogg was always putting holts on senior olayers this season. Hogg said that he had played seven years, and had never been questioned on the matter before. He had never put one on Fairbrother. Fairbrother; Just as well you didn't. The players then retired from the room. Hogg was suspended for two playing Saturdays and Fairbrother for four.. On receiving' his sentence, Fairbrother said they (the Rugby Union) were pretty weak as a Rugby Union He did not think the sentence would do any- good. He handed in his junior ] selector’s tickets, with a smile, and i hoped the ‘‘weak Rugby Union” would*’
