Mrs Foster Neil (Albury Park), is visiting Christchurch.

Mrs George Macdonald, of Lowry Hills, and Mrs Bruce Douglas, of Greta are staying with Sir George and Lady Clifford at Avonholme. Miss Cecily O’Rorke, Miss Christabel Bowen, are the guests of Mrs W. T. Helmore, of Timaru.

Mrs Cairns (Spreydon) is spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs E. Fleming, at Hororata.

Mrs J. Studholme, of Middleton Grange, is spending a few days in Timaru.

Mrs C. W. Mevill, Wellington, is visiting Mrs C. G. Dalgety, Worcester Street.

Mr and Mrs Dickinson (Dunedin), and Miss M. Elliott (Dunedin) are staying at the United Service Hotel.

Mr and Mrs C. G. Reynish, of Tasman, Nelson, are spending a month’s holiday with relatives at Pigeon Bay. Miss Molly Pears returned south yesterday after spending a few days with Mrs C. J. Treleaven, Leinster Road. Mrs Hayes, who has been visiting friends in Woodbury, has returned to Sumner. Mr and Mrs C. Bamford, of Sumner, are the guests of Mrs J. Macintosh, Woodbury. The marriage of Miss Rita Johnson, the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Johnson, of Grey Lynn, to Mr Frank Brisbane Wall, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Wall, of Christchurch, was celebrated in St Matthew's Church, Auckland, on Wednesday afternoon, says a “ Lyttelton Times ** correspondent. Canon Grant Cowen conducted the ceremony. On Saturday night a very enjoyable dance was given in the Sydenham Football Hall by the Lilac Dance Ast sembly. There was a large attend- ' ance. Music was supplied by Stam ler’s Orchestra. Mr Roy Jones carried out the duties of M.C. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mrs Carrick and Mr M. Todd, and a balloon dance by Mr Rhind and Miss M’Pherson. Extra dance music was played by Miss M’Pherson.

A pleasing ceremony took place at Papanui on Wednesday afternoon, when the members of the school staff met to make a presentation to Mrs D. M’Meekan, nee Miss Carrie Sloan Mr Noble, head master, eulogised Miss Sloan’s good work as a teacher. Mr Thwaites, assistant master, also spoke, and expressed pleasure that Miss Sloan was still continuing her work on the school staff. Mr Noble asked the guest to accept a set of Pyrex dishes from the staff.

The fortnightly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the W.C.T.U. was held on Wednesday. Miss Henderson presided. An apology for absence was received from Miss Blackwell. Mrs Day, honorary secretary, was appointed membership superintendent. Lt was arranged to hold the postponed jumble sale at Sydenham during the last week of this month. Members were reminded that the next meeting would be the White Ribbon Day, when the Rev J. F. Coursey would be the speaker. Recent guests at the Franz Josef Glacier Hotel, Waiho Gorge, include: Miss Hallahan (England), Mr and Mrs Rawle, Mr and Mrs Walker (Christchurch), Miss Fowler, Mrs King (Hokitika), Mr and Mrs G. Burrough (Nelson), Mrs Grimmond (Ross), Mrs T. E. White (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs Johnston (Greymouth), Mr Gus Gawne (Hermitage), Dr and Mrs Barnett (Dunedin), Mr Disney (Wellington), Mr Ashton (Australia), Mr Sheahan (Christchurch), Mr Anderson (Greymouth), Mr A. C. Beaumont (Wellington).

The committee of the Richmond Kindergarten met on Monday. Present: Miss Tabart (in the chair), Mesdames Marshall, West, Willcox, Forsythe, Pyne, Hitchcock, Miss M’llraith and Mesdames Dixon, Ramshaw, Darwin and Harold from the Mothers’ Committee. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Peverill and Reaby. Miss Jacobsen’s report showed a roll number of 40, and an average attendance of 26. Parents’ subscriptions amounted to £1 17s 7d. The school had re-opened on May 27, after the term holidays. Five children had left to attend the State school, and one to Sydenham. Final arrangements were made for the jumble sale.

Miss Kathleen Cracroft Wilson is the guest of Mrs Burnes-Loughnan. Mr and Mrs A. Acroyd are staying at the Hydro Grand, Timaru. Mrs Henry Jellett is leaving shortly for a visit to Ireland.

Miss Bromley * Cocks (Ranfurly Street) is staying with Mrs B. H. Tripp, at Orielton. Miss W. Coulthard, of Runanga, West Coast, is spending a holiday in Christchurch.

Miss Eleanor West-Watson, who has been staying with Mrs Stephen Blunt in Marlborough, has returned to Bishopscourt. A dance in aid of St Saviour’s Orphanages, organised by Mrs Cecil Wood, will be held in the Jellicoe Hall this morning.

The Shell Company Staff Ball will take place next Wednesday at the Winter Garden, when Miss Molly Jenkinson and Mr L. Bowden will give an exhibition of the latest dances.

Mr Martin (Wellington), Mrs Wright (Leeston), Miss E. Williams (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs Woods (Melbourne), Mr and Mrs Edmonds, are among the recent arrivals at the New Brighton Cafe, New Brighton.

The engagement is announced of Dolly, the youngest daughter of Mr and the late Mrs 11. Murfitt, of Rangiora, to Raymond (Raj'), the youngest son of Mr and Mrs F. Moore, of Belfast.

On Wednesday evening Mrs J. B. Pearson was hostess at a very enjoyable dance given at her residence, “Westella,” Upper Riccarton. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs J.
