MAORIS TO GET HUGE PAYMENT.
COMPENSATION FOR SALE OF CANTERBURY, Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, June 14. At the Native Land Court this morrv* ing Mr Tuiti Makitanara, Southern Maori M.P., when dealing with the Ngaitahu tribe claim which has befcll the subject of litigation for 80 years, stated that notwithstanding the Royal Commission’s recommendation of paying £254,000 to tribal beneficiaries in. compensation for the sale of the Canterbury province, no Parliament had put this recommendation into force, but now as the result of strang recommendations to the Native Minister the Prime Minister had expressed his intention to ask Parliament to appropriate £500,000 as compensation. In a further statement the mexnbqr said that proposals were afoot to erect at a cost of £3OOO, probably in Dunedsn, a huge carved Maori house.
