WESTLAND SUPPORTS TRUNK RAILWAY LINE.
LEAGUE DISCUSSES MANY QUESTIONS OF INTEREST. (Special to the “ Star.”) HOKITIKA, June 14. At a meeting of the Westland Progress League last evening support was given a proposal that a wood pulp syndicate should establish operations in Westland. It was resolved to communicate with the Government urging that the application of the syndicate for milling rights be dealt with as expeditiously as possible. The meeting resolved to support the completion of the South Island main trunk line as a useful link with the existing railway system, considering that the work would be of special benefit to the east and west coasts, the railway providing an additional outlet for commodities on this side of the island. It was decided to inquire from the Canterbury Automobile Association what steps are being taken to improve the existing motor road between Springfield and Bealey as referred to by the deputation when lately touring the coast, and in what way help could be rendered from this side in regard to the necessary bridge works along the route. The league resolved to approach the Canterbury Progress League regarding the cost of space for advertising purposes at the Canterbury Industrial Exhibition with a view to giving greater publicity to Westland scenic attractions. A good ■ deal of local financial support was promised for the suggestion, while it was hoped to enlist the co-operation of the Publicity and Tourist Departments to make an interesting display depicting the scenic attractions of the district. The meeting also resolved to ask the Tourist Department to take up the matter of improving the access to Lake Mahinapua as a tourist and holiday resort.
