DISSENSION IN LEAGUE CODE ON THE WEST COAST.
MARIST CLUB MAY SECEDE FROM GAME. (Special to the “Star") GREYMOUTH, June 7. It is an open secret that relations between the West Coast League Centre and some of the clubs under its jurisdiction have not been of too cordial a nature this season. The latest dispute concerns the Marist Club, and feeling is so keen that rumours are being freely circulated to the effect that if the club's wishes are not met, it is likely to secede from the League code. The trouble arose last week-end. when the scheduled senior game between Marist and Blackball was not played. The Marist Club claimed that, owing to a number of its. players being on the injured list, they were unable to field a team. The Postponement Committee agreed to the match being deferred. At a meeting of the Centre on Tuesday evening, however, the ’ match -was awarded _ to Blackball, after a lengthy discussion in committee. The decision of the Centre was re- ■ sen ted by the Marist Club, and a ; special meeting was held last evening. The outcome was that the following letter, signed by Mr C. Robins, secretary of the club, was received ■ this morning by the Centre:— “At a general meeting of the Marist Brothers Club, held last evening, the following resolution was passed; that a letter be forwarded from this club to the West Coast Rugby League Centre, stating that the Marist Club is not satisfied with the decision of the Centre in awarding the postponed game between the Blackball senior thirteen and the Marist senior team to the Blackball Club, and. further, that our delegates be instructed to convey the views of the club to a meeting of the Centre to be held before Sunday next, June 9. In this connection I wish to state that my club considers the action of your Centre most unconstitutional, as the Centre over-ruled the decision of the Postponement Committee, which is, in fact, the direct representative of the Centre in the matter of postponements. Since the game was postponed by the Postponement Committee, we contend that the onus of fielding a team was entirely removed from our club, and the above-mentioned action is, therefore, unfair, and most certainly unwarranted.” The president of the Centre, Mr J. D. Wingham, has convened a meeting of delegates, t‘o be held at Greymouth tomorrow afternoon, to discuss the club’s letter.
