A well-known boxing critic overseas has been writing on the value of science, and says the art of boxing is becoming a thing of the past; but in these cjays of commercialised sport the public call the tune, and so long as they are prepared to favour fights without frills so long will promoters encourage them. There is, of course, a vast difference between a scientific boxer and a pure slogger, but there is no doubt about the boxer who carries a knock-out punch being the favoured man at the present time. The manner in which the colonial youth regards his pastimes may to some people be rather hard to understand, says a correspondent of the “N.Z. Herald.” A football team journeyed from a certain marine suburb last Saturday to a suburb on the shores of the ftfanukau, but arrived five minutes past the allotted time in which the rules allowed the game to commence. So the home team point blank refused to play find claimed a win by default.
