Purdy Was Knocked Out After The Gong Sounded.
HOUSE SCREAMED WITH EXCITEMENT, AND REFEREE DID NOT HEAR BELL (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received June 8, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 8. THE “Guardian,” commenting on last night’s fight, says that when Purdy was knocked out by Hancock in the fourth round he rose at the count of five, hut was immediately dropped again. The packed house screamed with excitement and the hell rang, but the uproar was so great that the referee did not hear it. He continued counting over Purdy, who rose at three, hut he was promptly knocked down again for eight. The din was still terrific, and when he fell to the hoards for the fourth lime the referee was still unaware that the gong had sounded and he crowned Hancock. Actually, the bout continued for 25 seconds after the bell had rung.—Australian Press Association.
