PUBLIC MEETING. A public meeting of ratepayers will be held in Rickerl y’s Buildings at 8 p.m. on Monday to consider a protest regarding the Government valuations. ANGLICAN. There was a large attendance at the Mother’s Union on Wednesday when Mrs T. Hamilton gave a splendid address, the subject being “ The Little Irritations of Life.” STYX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. The Mutual Improvement Society of the Styx Presbyterian Church recently opened the winter season with a most enjovable “mock banquet.” Speeches were made by the Rev J. Tennant. Messrs Donaldson, senr.. T. Donaldson. R Shaw, A. M’Connell. E. Freeman, Mesdames Dixon and Marwick. Songs were given by Miss T. Harris and Mr J. Tennant and a recitation was given by Mrs Marwick. CONCERT PARTY. An enjoyable concert in aid of the Home Mission Fund was given in the Methodist Sunday Schoolroom on Thursday by a Maori concert' party. The Rev A. Hopper introduced the party and hakas, poi and other dances fL re given as well as a number of vocal j instrumental items. At the conclusion the Rev A. Peters thanked the I performers.

BASKETBALL. j Ilinemoa A team had another win on j Saturday, this time defeating Banks j College by 13 goals to 12. METHODIST LADIES’ GUILD. The annual meeting of the Methodist Ladies’ Guild was held on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev A. Hopper presiding. The annual report dealt with the various activities during the year, and the balance-sheet showed a credit of £7 2s 3d. The election of officers resulted : President, Mrs Haines; vice-president, Mesdames Quigley, Elliott, F. J. Carr; secretary, Mrs Gough; treasurer, Mrs Tillman; parsonage committee, Mesdames Haines, Gibson, Cummings, Hopper and O. M. Jones; buying committee, Mesdames Baynes and Quigley. A resolution of sympathy was passed to Mesdames Quigley and Carr in their illness. A short musical programme consisting of songs by Mrs Gough. Miss Thelma Harris and Miss Clarice Cooper, and a recitation by Mrs Merrin was given. PAPANUI MEMORIAL HALL. The sub-committee elected at the annual meeting of residents of the hall rating area to consider the matter of the rates on the hall, met on Monday evening. There were present Messrs W. G. Chapman (chairman of the Hall Committee), Mr R. W. Hawke, M.P., and Mr J. Sturrock. It was decided to ask the City Council to apply for exemption of the hall tor rating on the following grounds: i

(1) That it is a war memorial: (2) That the total revenue of the hall is not sufficient to pay interest on the loan; (3) That tw«-fifths of the loan area is in the Waimairi County, and all public halls in the county are exempt from rates; (4) That the Papanui Library, which occupies the most valuable frontage of the hall is a library in the city on which rates are paid; (5) That half the rates collected go to local bodies other than the City Council; (6) That it is an undue hardship that Papanui people who built a hall and library for themselves should be compelled to pay for the Municipal Concert Hall and other libraries in the city. PERSONAL. Mr D. Hadley has gone for a holiday to Camp Bay. “ WINGS.” Papanui residents will have an opportunity on Tuesday and Wednesday next of witnessing the Paramount special “Wings.” A matinee will be screened at 3 p.m. on Tuesda}’. CONCERT. A popular and varied concert will be given at the Harewood Hall on Tuesday. Tune 18, to raise funds for the Frieston Methodist Bible Class. JUMBLE SALE. Next Saturday, June 15, at 2 p.m., the Styx Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild will hold a jumble sale featuring a produce stall, also cakes and clothing at the Memorial Hall. METHODIST GIRLS’ CLUB. The usual weekly meeting of the Methodist Girls’ Club was held on Tuesday evening. A very interesting and helpful talk on health was given by Mrs Hopper, and was followed by physical jerks and games. After this the members separated to their study groups. The evening concluded with the singing of the “Camp Chorus.” Next week is

the night for dramatics. Two short plays will be given by the girls. TENNIS. A match was played at St Paul s Courts on the King s Birthday between a team from Bryndwr Tennis Club and 5t Paul’s.
