BUSINESS FOR MONDAY NIGHT’S COUNCIL MEETING.
CONTROL OF BICYCLE TRAFFIC IS PROPOSED. The City Council, at its meeting on Monday night, will have before it an application from the Canterbury Rowing Association to the council to pay the cost of erecting a weir on the River Avon to increase the depth of the rowing course, the cost to be met by trust funds held by the council for the purpose of improving the river. Other business to be transacted by the council will include a letter from the “No More War Movement” asking the council to receive a deputation, when they propose asking the council to assist their movement. The By-laws Committee will report as to what action was taken with regard to the control of bicycle traffic. The question of the purchase of a strip of land in Trafalgar Street for road widening purposes will be dealt with. The question of the setting up of a commission to consider the proposed tunnel road will be considered. The city solicitor’s opinion as to whether the rates are to be levied on the new valuations will be presented. The council will consider improving the lighting facilities in Linwood Avenue. The report of the Works and Abattoir Committees will explain w'hat is being done for the relief of unemployment. The question of erecting a balustrade along the river front adjoining the site of the new band rotunda, Cambridge Terrace, will be considered. The reconstruction of Page’s Road will be discussed, as well as the question of the maintenance of the roadway between tr&m tracks. The question of raising a special loan for the construction of channelling in Papanui West District is to come up for decision. Councillor Armstrong is to move the following motion: “That a practical representative elected by the men working under that particular committee with a view to obtaining the advice of workmen of long years of service which would be the practical side, and combined with the theoretical side obtained from the general manager and engineer who are allowed to sit and give advice to the committee when required, be allowed to sit on each of the following committees: Electricit\*, Works and Reserves.”
