ADDRESS BY MR BALDWIN HEARD ON RADIO IN CITY.

“ I AM CONFIDENT OF YOUR TRUST AGAIN.”

At 7.45 this morning (9.15 p.m. English summer time) the announcement came through the 8.8. C. short-wave station GSSW: “London calling. This evening we are to broadcast a Conservative address by Mr Baldwin.”

The Prime Minister only spoke for twenty-two minutes, but reception in Christchurch was very good, every word being plainly heard, and much clearer than the reception of Mr Ramsay MacDonald’s speech yesterday morning (writes Mr L. R. Simpson, of 25, Gloucester Street).

Mr Baldwin opened with the remark that he was rather hoarse, and felt very tired, as he had been going hard at it since 9.30 a.m. He outlined matters which the Government had performed during its term of office, and said that peace only came from men of goodwill. He particularly made reference to widows and orphans, and oldage pensions, and said that during his four and a half years’ term of office better housing conditions had been provided than by any previous Government. Amongst many other things he earnestly appealed to all men and women to exercise their votes on the morrow as otherwise the system of Democracy would not be complete. He stated that he had shown his confidence in the women of the country, and he asked them to show their confidence in him, and concluded by saying that the people had trusted him before and he was confident of their trust again.
