LACK OF WIRELESS AT LIGHTHOUSES IS DEFENCE WEAKNESS

PUBLIC OPINION WILL FORCE AUSTRALIA TO INSTAL APPARATUS.

(United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received May 30, 9.5 a.m.)

SYDNEY, May 30. The “Sydney Morning Herald,” commenting on the plight of Moir and Owen, who were marooned for a week at a lighthouse on the Australian coast without the outside world knowing, says that it “emphasises the weak link in our defence measures and reveals how easily the advance guard of an enemy force could have landed and remained there until it had consoli dated its position.”

The “Herald” alludes to the action of the New Zealand Government in directing that wireless be installed in a number of lighthouses on the New Zealand coast, and adds: “The Austra lian Government will be compelled bv force of public opinion to follow New Zealand’s example.”—Australian Press Association.
