INTERESTING SPORT AT INVERCARGILL.

(Special to the “ Star. ” ). INVERCARGILL, February 28. The Invercargill Trotting Club’s annual fixture was brought to a conclusion to-day' when the weather was overcast and threatening 'at the start. Light rain commenced to fall early' in the afternoon, increasing to a downpour later, with the result that the track became heavy’, slowing down times and probably affecting some starters. Racing was interesting throughout and was very keen up to and including the final event. The meeting can be ranked as yielding a substantial profit to strengthen the already very’ strong financial position of the club. Mr W. Nofman started well throughout. Bingen Maid was elected a strong fancy for the Trial Handicap, carrying 315 tickets more than Almont Cling, with Real Home 195 chances off in third place. At the start Reservoir, Patch Pointer. Fescue Bill and Southern Don forfeited their chances. Commencing smartly’ Bingen Maid at once took command from Doncliff. The pair led all the way from a bunch. Bingen Maid turned for home to win easily by three lengths from Doncliff. with Sunfirc only half a length off third. Then there was a gap of three lengths to Almont Cling, followed by Wild Bingen, Play Wave and Real Home. The winner, who is only a four-y'ear-old promises to develop into a smart performer under the care of her efficient South Canterbury trainer. Wild Bingen paced well until the position appeared hopeless. The winner fell on the first day but her worth evidently was broadcast, as she always was first fancy' to-day. Real Home paced in third place to the straight and evidently is a useful pacer. Almont Cling displayed little dash, but travelled well. The coupled Helen Maegregor-Kyra attracted most support for the Murihiku Handicap, to carry 171 tickets more than Bon Fleur, with Ruby Bingen 81 chances off in third place, but Merce Bingen and Royal Stan also were fancied. At the start Billy Moor and Merce Bingen got away' badly’. Fortress, the early leader, broke and lost his place at seven furlongs, and

Helen Macgregor took command, followed past the five furlongs mark by Merce Bingen, Buck Up, Kvra, Royal Stan. Helen Macgregor just led to the straight from Buck Up. Then Kyra appeared on the scene and Buck Up weakened. Kyra challenged the leader, getting up on the post as his stablemate left her feet. Kyra won by half a length from Helen M’Gregor with Buck Up four lengths off third. Then came Royal Stan close up, followed by Merce Bingen and Fortress. Buck Up found the pace too merry for him. Merce Bingen trotted a good race after getting away badly and must take rank as a smart three-year-old filly. For the leading event of the day, the Trotting Club Handicap, the Cup winner of the previous day, Fair Wave, was sent out first fancy, carrying over 550 tickets more than Shady Spot and Wild Nita, who were equally supported. Then came Rona Bingen, 355 chances off, as fourth fancy. Sheila Fleetwood started badly. John Logan made the pace for a mile from -Wild Nita, Stormbell, Shady Spot and • Slump. Passing the mile post, Fair Wave started a strong run that landed her in second place to John Logan at the six furlongs post. Before the far turn was reached, Fair Wave was in command from John Logan, Wild Nita, Shady Spot and 'Tarndale. Three furlongs from home, Fair Wave led Wild Nita. with Shady Spot always moving up, followed by Tarndale At the home turn, Shady Spot joined Fair Wave, and and the pair landed into the home stretch together from Wild Nita, Tarndale and Stormbell. Below the distance, Shady Spot paced to the front, and went on to win comfortably by three lengths from Fair Wave, who beat Wild Nita by half a length for second place, while Tarndale was half a length further back in fourth place. Then came Stormbell. Shady Spot, who is owned in Invercargill by Messrs Cooper and Henry, was bred by the latter. She is a promising five-year-old mare, and is likely to win in better time later * on. Fair Wave might have made her run a little too soon, but she does not appear to have the pace of the winner, who was very capably driven by the local reinsman, A. M’Leila g. Wild Nita

paced well to the straight, but met more than her match in the two horses in front of her at the finish. The southern gelding, Reo Chimes, was first fancy for the Coldstream Handicap, carrying 205 tickets more than John Appear, with Play Wave fourteen chances off in third place. Eiffel Tower lost his driver at the start, while Rosaleen and First Imperial refused to strike their gait. Red Shiner was pulled up when the straight was reached. John Appear, Thrift and Red Chimes headed a bunch throughout to the home stretch. In a strenuous finish, John Appear stayed on longest to beat Reo Chimes by & length and a half, with the fast finishing Play Wave, who came from a long way back, four lengths away third. Then came Princess Pointer and Knight Commander. The winner, who is owned by Messrs Dawson and Hargreaves, of Dunedin, came in for rounds of applause, as the partners are good patrons of southern tracks each season. For the Jellicoe Handicap, Nelson de Oro always was most in demand, to carry 281 tickets more than Imperial Thorpe, with Shady Spot (penalised 24yds) seventy-eight chances off in third place. Sandown got away badly. Hush a Bye made the pace to the six furlongs post, where he tangled. Then Nelson de Oro shot to the front to lead Imperial Thorpe and Logan Hanlon to the straight. In the run home Nelson de Oro drew away to win easily; by three lengths from Logan Hanlon, with Shady Spot a head away third, half a length in front of Imperial Thorpe. Then came Miss Adonis. The winner gave his well-known trainer, J. Henderson, a comfortable drive, and had the race won early. It was raining hard when the Visitors’ Handicap came up for decision, with Country King a solid first fancy, carrying 284 tickets more than Four Bells, who was twenty-two chances ahead of Princess Thorpe. Then came Erin’s Fortune, seventeen supporters further off. Honest Nell, Caesar and Maybird lost their chances at the start, then Red Shiner pulled up. Alva Lass led to the mile post, where Erin’s Fortune shot out to show the way to the far turn. Here Country King moved into second place, attended by Winnie Chrysler, Erin Chimes and Four Bells. Erin’s Fortune led Country King into the straight, where the latter eased up, but the former went on to win by nearly ten lengths from Winnie Chrysler, with Princess Thorpe two lengths off third. Then came Marinca, Country King and Freelance. The winner is a four-year-old performer. In the Waikiwi Handicap the local gelding Sunspeck was first fancy, carrying 300 tickets more than the coupled Kyra and Jock Bingen, with Bon Fleur 160 chances off in third place. At the start Gardenella, El Carvo and Pattie Bingen started badly. Sunspeck and Merce Bingen made the pace for a mile and a quarter, with Wattle Patch working up into third place. Half a mile from home, Merce Bingen was beaten and Wattle Patch went after Sunspeck. Three furlongs from home Wattle Patch disposed of Sunspeck, while Gardenella moved up. Wattle Patch drew out in the straight, and, holding on, won easily by five lengths from Gardenella, who came fast over the last five furlongs, Sunspeck four lengths off third. Then came _ Jack Bingen. Bon Fleur and Pattie Bingen. The winner trotted brilliantly throughout, making light of the heavy going, and won with the greatest of ease. For the Au Revoir Handicap, Return Voyage was fancied by 112 tickets over Imperial Thorpe, with Logan Hanlon 231 chances away in third place, 64 supporters ahead of Nan Brent. Miss Adonis got away badly, and Sunbell tangled early. Return Voyage led out going to the back to set the pace to the far turn from Lady Freeman, Logan Hanlon and Imperial Thorpe. Passing the three furlongs post, the order was the same, with Nan Brent close up in fifth place. Return Voyage just led round the home turn from Lady Freeman and Logan Hanjon. Imperial Thorpe came fast on the outside at the distance. Return Voyage was under pressure, with Logan Hanlon challenging and Imperial Thorpe closing on the pair, while Miss Adonis was coming from behind. A great finish resulted in Imperial Thorpe getting up to win by a neck from Logan Hanlon, with Return Voyage a neck off third, half a length in front of Miss Adonis.

Then came Lady Freeman. It was the best race of the day, in going which had become heavy and holding as a result of a downpour of rain. The winner put up a good performance, as he lost ground early and had a considerable amount of leeway to make up from the two-furlong mark.
