CAPTAIN W. MANNING DIES IN WELLINGTON.

COMMANDED MAORI FOR MANY YEARS.

Per Press Association, WELLINGTON, February 13. The death occurred yesterday of Captain Walter Manning, one of the best known masters in the employ ot the Union Company, who retired in 1918 after 36 years of service as a master mariner. 23 years of which were in the Wellington-Lyttelton ferry serVl ßorn in London, he was apprenticed to engineering, but took to sea life ana came to New Zealand in 1873, ;joimng the Union Company in 1880 manded the Maori from 1907 till his retirement. He was in his seventy-fifth year. -
