PROGRESS SHOWN IN CONGREGATIONAL CHURCHES.

The annual meeting of the Canterbury District Congregational Committee was held in Trinity Church vestry on Monday evening, the Rev D. Gardner Miller, chairman of the district, occupying the chair. The Rev I. Sarginson, of the Linwood Church, and the Rev J. Milburn Stewart, of the Tennyson Street Church, were also pre sent, and fifteen delegates from the four churches, which included Timaru. The annual report stated that the past year had been most successful. The assembly meetings held in March last had a most stimulating effect upon the whole district. During the year three special and four ordinary meetings had been held, and the attendance was good. At the beginning of the year the treasurer, Mr James Lorimer, left on a trip to England, and was welcomed back to take up his duties. .The honorary secretary, Mr G. E. Franklin, retires from office this year after nearly six years’ service, and during his term had given careful attention to the duties pertaining to his office. Reports from the various churches were encouraging, and showed progress. Tennyson Street Church, early in the year, had lost the services of its pas tor, who had received a call to the mission field, but in October last the Rev J. Milburn Stewart had received a call, and a happy settlement had been the result. Mr J. Lorimer, treasurer, presented the balance-sheet, which was the most satisfactory for some years. Though the expenses of the year were heavy on account of the assembly meetings, there was a credit balance of £l2 Is 3d*. The election of officers resulted: ' Chairman of the district, Mr 11. Sturge; honorary secretary, Rev J. Milburn Stewart; treasurer, Mr James Lorimer. During the meeting the chairman expressed deep regret at the death of Miss Bradbury, one of the oldest members of the Linwood Church, and suggested that special mention of her services to the church be included in the annual report.
