SERIOUS OUTBREAK OF FIREBLIGHT IN THE WAIRARAPA.

Per Press Association. MASTERTON, January 30. A deputation of district fruit-growers waited on the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union today asking support in having fireblight areas declared round Masterton and Carterton. The executive agreed readilv to give the support asked for, anrl also strongly urged orchardists to demand that the whole of the Wairarapa be declared a fireblight area. The outbreak of the disease this year in Masterton and Carterton is serious, and, as infection is caused largely by hawthorn hedges, declaration of commercial fruit-growing areas under the Fireblight Act is necessary, so that action may be taken to have hawthorn removed. The Masterton and Carterton Borough Councils already have for■warded applications for the declaration of such areas around the respective towns.
