FAMINE IN CHINA MAY KILL 10,000,000.
(United Press Assn.—By Eleetrle Telegraph—Copyright). SYDNEY, January 30 Mr E. Ainsworth, formerly of thai Asiatic Petroleum Company, arrived from China to-day. He declared that 1 China was faced with the worst famine for many years. Five provinces were stricken. It was likely that 10,000,000 Chinese would perish of starvation. Three parties had combined to form the Nationalist Government at Nanking, and were doing their utmost to create order out of chaos, but the prospects of famine i*i Shantung, Honan, Shansi, Shensi and Kansu were awfuL Roots, leaves and bark were eaten by the inhabitants. To make matters worse, civil war was continuing in the various districts. Mr Ainsworth, with his wife and three daughters, lived for many years in Honan. They are now going to take up farming in New Zealand, in order to escape from the misery of their Chinese surroundings.—Australian Press Association.
