BENCH AND POLICE PAY TRIBUTES TO MR S. E. M’CARTHY.

COURT ADJOURNED THIS MORNING AS TRIBUTE. The Bench, police and social workers paid tributes to the late Mr S. E. M’Carthy at this, morning’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, when proceedings were adjourned for a few minutes. Mr H. A. Young, S.M., said that although most of the lawyers were absent on their holidays, he felt he should take the opportunity of referring to the death of his friend and colleague, Mr S. E. M’Carthy. “For many years Mr M’Carthy w*as a Magistrate in different parts of New Zealand,” said Mr Young. “He was senior Magistrate here for four years, and retired on reaching the compulsory age limit. On his retirement he had a splendid record of service. Since his retirement he has practised in these Courts, and his experience and help have been of great help to myself and other Magistrates. Only last week he was in Court, working with his usual efficiency. I am sure we shall miss him. I would like to extend my sympathy to his widow and family.” Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick, on behalf of the police, added to the Magistrate’s tribute.

“I first met Mr M’Carthy in Wellington, when he was a Magistrate there,” said the sub-inspector, “and found him most humane while on the bench. He always gave great thought to cases brought before him. I renewed my acquaintance with him when I came to Christchurch. I must express the deep regret the police of Christchurch feel at his death, and extend to his widow and family the deepest sympathy’.”

“On behalf of the social workers of Christchurch,” said Major J. Barnes, of the Salvation Army, “I want to add a tribute to what has already been said. The social workers of Christchurch will be very sorry to know Air Al’Carthy has passed away. He did much for us. I would like to extend to his widow and family my deepest sympathy.”

The Court was then adjourned for a few minutes.
