ANNUAL SUMMER SCHOOL OPENED AT LITTLE THEATRE.

COMPREHENSIVE COURSE ARRANGED BY W.E.A. The eighth annual summer school organised by the Canterbury branch of the Workers’ Educational Association was opened in the Little Theatre of Canterbury College last evening. There was an attendance of about fifty students, some of whom had travelled from as far south as Invercargill. The lady visitors are being accommodated at Rolleston House, and the men in the College gymnasium, where bedding is provided. In opening the school, Professor J. Shelley said that the idea was to study the nature of progress, social, cultural and industrial. The school would close on January 5. Opportunities would be offered for sports, rambles and visits to municipal and industrial enterprises. The following committees were elected:—Concert, Misses Laing, Denby. Struthers and Thompson, Messrs Maitin, Macquarrie, J. Thompson and August (convener); rambles and sports. Mrs Mathews, Miss Walker. Messrs Laing, Roller, Wilkerson and Chapman (convener). Group seminars will commence daily at 9 a.m., to be followed by the main course of lectures at 11 a.m. The lecture to-day was "The Relation of Human Progress to Material Culture,” by Professor Shelley. The afternoon will be devoted to excursions and games: and from 6.30 p.m. Professor Shelley will give lectures on music, art, literature or drama. These will be followed by concerts, socials and popular lectures.
