NEW MINISTER INDUCTED AT NEW BRIGHTON.
DR HECTOR MACLEAN COMMENCES MINISTRY. The Rev Hector N. Maclean. M.A., Ph.D., was inducted into the pastoral charge of the New Brighton Presbyterian Church last evening. The Rev G. K. Aitken conducted the service. The Commandments were read and the responses sung by the choir. The reading was taken from the 16th chapter of St John: “These things have I spoken unto you.” ‘ Miss Doris Eaglesome sang the solo “ Gloria.” and the choir the anthem “ Beautiful are They.” The Rev J. A. Allan then preached from the first epistle of Peter, chapter 2. verse 7. “ Unto you which believe, lie is precious.” “You which believe,” said the preacher, was a gracious and sweet name for Christians. They were gathered together that night as a testimony to the fact that their religion was an acting, loving, obedient, living thing. If there were no God. or if God were too great for men, then there was but death beyond man’s ephemeral pleasures. But it was a blind spirit who could not see reflected in himself the spirit of Christ. The Rev John Miller briefly addressed the new minister. In the name of the Presbytery of Christchurch he congratulated him and wished him much happiness and abundant success. The Rev W. Bower Black then addressed the congregation. The contract upon which they had entered, he said, was a mutual one. Much depended on the minister, but he had been long enough in the pulpit to know that without the prayerful and practical support of the congregation little success would be theirs. The singing of the ordination hymn and the Benediction concluded the service after which a social hour was held to enable the congregation to meet the new minister.
