CHRIST’S COLLEGE WIN BOAT RACE.

LED ALL THE WAY, AND DEFEATED WANGANUI CREW BY OVER LENGTH

(Special to the “ Stan") WANGANUI. December 18. The annual four—cared boat race between Christ's (‘ollege and \Vanganui Collegiate School was rowed this morning over a. mile course on the V‘Vanganui River. Conditions were perfect for rowing. The water was as smooth as a mill pond and there was no wind. Great interest was taken in the race. a large crowd assembling on the river banks. The start was an even one, both crews hitting the water together. Christ‘s College put in a .fast dozen at the start. and this carried them into the lead. They then settled down to a stroke of 36 to the minute. with “fanganui, half a. length behind. doing 35 to the minute. The visitors were swinging along in fine style. a feature of their rowing being the punch put into the catch. About half-way. Christ's College still had half :1 lengths advantage, but “'anganui now began to lessen the gap and drew up to within four feet. Christ's College bored over rather close to their opponents, forcing the latter nearer the bank on the far side. A quarter of a mile from home the bow in the \Vanganui boat was probably tiring and the visitors began to draw away again. finally winning by a. length and a quarter after a splendid race. The winners rowed well throughout and were undoubtedly the better crew on the day. Their rowing was crisp and clean, with plenty of life in their boat. while the local boys did not put the snap and dash into their work which had been noticeable in their trials. Their rowing suggested staleness. The crews were :

Christ’s College—D. G. M’Hardv (stroke), A. R. Cowper (3), N. H. C. Batchelor (2), J. H. Chisholm (bow), and M. P. S. Jones (cox). Mr A. J. Dunn was coach.

Wanganui Collegiate School—W. Taylor (stroke), D. E. Williams (3), M. H. Blyth (2), 11. G. Kemp (bow), and I. A. Ewen (cox). Mr W. Sharpe was coach.

The time for the mile was 6min Oisec. A slight current was with the rowers.
