COUNCIL PROPOSES RAISING LOAN FOR WORKERS’ DWELLINGS.
NORTHCOTE HOUSES TO BE RE-CONDITIONED,
The Town Planning Committee of the City Council has had under consideration the question of recommending the raising of a further loan for the purpose of making advances for the erection of workers’ dwellings." There are still some thirty applications in hand. Before taking any steps in this direction, however, the committee communicated with the Superintendent of the State Advances Office with a view to ascertaining the Department’s intentions with reference to the houses in the Northcote Settlement.
A reply has now been received intimating that the Department proposes reconditioning seven of the houses, electing new fences and constructing concrete footpaths. When these seven houses have been disposed of a further number will be similarly dealt with. It is anticipated that the selling price in no case will exceed £9OO, and, after payment of a deposit of £lO, the weekly instalments on a 36£ years’ term of purchase will be slightly less than £1 5s per week, inclusive of interest, repayment of principal, rates and insurance.
As this step will greatly alleviate the housing shortage in the city, the committee is of the opinion that the raising of a further loan by the council is not justified, and the State Advances Department has been advised that the committee will be pleased to co-operate with it in disposing of the houses in the settlement. The report was adopted.
