YOUTH PLEADS GUILTY TO THEFT
PROBATION OFFICER WILL FURNISH REPORT.
A youth was charged before Mr E. D. Mosley in the Magistrate’s Court this moiming as follows:—(1) That on December 12 he did steal the sum of 30s from his employers; and (2) that between September 20 and December 12 he stole sums, amounting to £5 10s Bd, from his employers. The first charge was withdrawn by leave of court. Accused pleaded guilty to the second charge. “The accused was in the employ of a city store,” said Chief-Detfctive Lewis. “He had authority to collect money for butter and eggs, and also to buy butter and eggs. On several occasions he balanced his affairs with credit slips. Thfen he began to issue credit slips without buying anything.. The offences have taken place over the last two months, and the amount is about £5. He has been perfectly frank about the whole business.” Mr Livingstone, who appeared for accused, said that he was nineteen years of age. He was one of a family of seven, only two of whom were earning wages. His mother worked also outside of the home. Accused was given £3 2s 6d a week for his work with the firm, and he paid £2 a week into the home to help keep it going. In view of these circumstances .application was made for suppression of t accused’s name. Mr Darby, Probation Officer, said that as far as he had inquired he was not satisfied. He would need further time to make a full report. The case was adjourned till December 20, and accused’s name was ordered to be suppressed. Bail was allowed in accused’s own recognisance of £25.
